Term 4 Science

It’s been another busy and energetic term in Science, and it’s been great seeing students continue to build their curiosity, problem‑solving, and growth mindset right up to the end of the year. Here’s a look at what each year level has been exploring:

Prep – Learning from Country

Prep students have been learning to slow down, look closely, and notice the changes happening around them. They explored local seasonal patterns and how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples use observations of plants, animals and weather to understand Country.

Level 1 – Caring for Earth’s Resources

This term, Level 1 students learned about the importance of looking after Earth’s water, land and air. They explored ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle to help care for our environment. Students investigated the different types of soil around the school and discovered the living things found within them. They also looked at how we can keep soil healthy through composting, worm farms and reducing landfill waste. To finish the unit, students created a range of eco‑friendly products using recycled materials — including handmade paper, bunting and simple flying toys. Their creativity and problem‑solving were a highlight of the term.

Level 2 – Exploring Space: The Sun, Moon and Stars

Level 2 immersed themselves in the wonders of the sky this term. Students investigated patterns in the Sun, Moon and stars, exploring:

  • how the Sun moves across the sky and changes our shadows
  • why the Moon looks different over a month
  • star patterns and seasonal sky changes
  • how First Nations sky stories help explain time, weather and connection to Country

Students enjoyed looking at the Moon phases and tracking observations over time.

Level 3 – Rocks, Soils, Weather & Climate

Level 3 explored what our landscape is made of and how it changes. They examined rocks, minerals and soils, looked at how weather affects landforms. Students wrapped up the unit by creating an engaging comic book that explained a natural event or landscape change.

Level 4 – Water in Our World

Level 4 learned about the water cycle, water sources, and how communities can use water responsibly. This unit combined science with creativity as students began planning their very own Water Music Videos.

Level 5 – Day & Night, Planets & Gravity

This space unit had students investigating how gravity works, why we have day and night, and how the Earth, Sun and Moon interact. They pulled all their learning together by designing a choose‑your‑own‑adventure game, explaining space concepts through storytelling and branching choices.

Level 6 – Earth in Motion: Geological Changes & Natural Hazards

Level 6 have been exploring the powerful forces that shape our planet — earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering, erosion and deposition. They also learned how natural hazards impact communities and how we can prepare for them. Students demonstrated their understanding through a 'Natural Hazards' Magazine, combining research, diagrams and clear explanations.

🌏 Wrapping Up a Big Year in Science

Across the whole school, students have asked questions, tried new ideas, taken risks, and built confidence as young scientists. It’s been fantastic to see their growth. Not just in what they’ve learned, but in the way they think, wonder and problem solve.

Looking forward to another great year of learning in 2026!
