Grade 4

English

Over the last two weeks,  the grade 4 students have been immersed in the reading of Peter Brown's novel Wild Robot. Along with discussions about the vocabulary, themese and characters students have been investigating the structure and literary devices used to write persuaisve pieces.

In addition, students continue to practise reading fluency, handwriting and spelling throughout the week.

Mathematics

In recent weeks, the Year 4 students have been exploring decimal numbers, with a focus on representing and writing tenths and hundredths in decimal form, as well as placing decimal numbers on a number line.

Additionally, students have been practising their fluency with number facts for four minutes each day. They are working towards achieving automaticity in recalling these facts, which will provide a strong foundation for understanding more complex mathematical concepts in the upper primary years and beyond.

Garden and Inquiry

Our garden sessions continue to be a key focus in Year 4. Students have been actively supporting our volunteers in maintaining the garden. They have been exploring Permaculture Principle Number 4 – 'Use and value resources' – and discussing ways we can reduce our reliance on finite resources

Rethinking Reedback in our Classrooms

At BHPS, we're embracing a more effective approach to student feedback. Instead of traditional 'red-pen' corrections, our teachers are providing timely, targeted feedback during lessons. This method encourages students to engage with their learning and make improvements in real-time. Research indicates that such feedback can significantly enhance student learning outcomes.

While students' books may appear less marked, this reflects a shift towards meaningful feedback. By focusing on understanding and growth, we're fostering a more engaging and effective learning environment.
