Grade 2

Explore the Learning in Grade 2

Literacy

In Week 5, the Grade 2’s will conclude their Core Knowledge unit, ‘Uluru.’ Their syntax and grammar focus will be on beginning with subordinating conjunctions – although, even and though.

In Week 6, the Grade 2’s will begin a new Core Knowledge unit, ‘Fairytales and Tall Tales.’  Some of the stories explored will include, ‘The Fisherman and his Wife,’ ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ and ‘The Beauty and the Beast.’ Their syntax and grammar focus will be on converting fragments into sentences.

During explicit phonics instruction, students will be learning to read and spell the new sounds, voiced ‘ck’ and ‘wh’ in words such as ‘duck,’ ‘sick’ ‘whack’ and ‘whip.’ In handwriting, they will be focusing on anti-clockwise letters, ‘a’, ‘c’  ‘d’, ‘g’, ‘q’ and ‘o’.

Numeracy

Students will be introduced to ‘change’ problems and explore 3D objects.

Rethinking Feedback in our Classrooms

At BHPS, we're embracing a more effective approach to student feedback. Instead of traditional 'red-pen' corrections, our teachers are providing timely, targeted feedback during lessons. This method encourages students to engage with their learning and make improvements in real-time. Research indicates that such feedback can significantly enhance student learning outcomes.

While students' books may appear less marked, this reflects a shift towards meaningful feedback. By focusing on understanding and growth, we're fostering a more engaging and effective learning environment.
