Explore the Learning in Prep

Literacy

The Preps will begin a new Core Knowledge unit this week, ‘My History.’ This unit focuses on students’ personal family history and understanding what makes families unique. The Preps will also continue their author study of Julia Donaldson. During the next two weeks they will focus on the texts, ‘Superworm’ and ‘The Gruffalo’s Child.’ The students will be explicitly taught rhyme, vocabulary, syntax and grammar through these texts. They will practice writing modelled sentences that require the students to identify the ‘who’ ‘doing’ and ‘where’ components of a sentence. The students will also be focusing on the new sounds ‘y’, and ‘z’ through explicit phonics, handwriting and reading fluency instruction.

Numeracy

Students will be learning about the ‘plus’ symbol, capacity and consolidating their knowledge of addition through the strategy of ‘counting all.’

Rethinking Feedback in our Classrooms

At BHPS, we're embracing a more effective approach to student feedback. Instead of traditional 'red-pen' corrections, our teachers are providing timely, targeted feedback during lessons. This method encourages students to engage with their learning and make improvements in real-time. Research indicates that such feedback can significantly enhance student learning outcomes.

While students' books may appear less marked, this reflects a shift towards meaningful feedback. By focusing on understanding and growth, we're fostering a more engaging and effective learning environment.
