Exploring Electricity in Year 5 and 6

This term, our Year 5 and 6 students have been diving into the fascinating world of electricity and circuits. They’ve been learning about the different components of electrical circuits and how these elements influence the transfer and transformation of energy.

As part of their studies, students have begun exploring how switches work and are now applying their knowledge to design prototype backup circuits. We’ve also investigated the causes and impacts of blackouts, helping students understand real-world applications of electrical systems.

In addition, students have conducted independent research into the invention of the light bulb. Using their findings, they’ve written informative reports about Thomas Edison and his groundbreaking work.

It’s been a highly engaging unit, full of hands-on le

arning and thoughtful inquiry!

YEAR 3 AND 4 NEWS

Middle School swimming program

During Week 4, Year 3 and 4 students were lucky enough to head to Casey Race for the MS swimming program.

Students engaged in a range of fun activities, ranging from practicing their 4 swimming strokes to practicing their diving skills in the big pool. It was great to see so many students showing our school values outside of the classroom within the general public.

Core Knowledge

This term, students have delved into the core knowledge topic of "Earth and Space Sciences." Students have been very engaged in this topic as we have completed lots of hands on, real life activities. This topic has been intergrated into reading and writing, where students have been reading and writing a range of genres including narratives, persuasive writing and information reports.

Students have been exploring the topics of:

  • Rocks, minerals and soils are important Earth resources and have observable properties that enable them to be used in a variety of ways.

  • Water is an important Earth resource that originates from various sources.

  • Understanding the water cycle through the environment by moving through the sky, landscape and ocean.

    FOUNDATION REPORT

Our Foundation students have had an amazing first 60 days at school – yes, we are really counting! Each morning, we add an extra dot to our 100 days of school tens frames and we are looking forward to a day of celebrations in Term 3 when we hit that magic century. Since our last report our core work has continued with students increasing  and skills in phonics, writing and Maths. The structure of our morning literacy block has changed as the students’ skills have increased, it now includes dictation, fluency pairs and structured vocabulary activities where we learn a new word each week. In Maths, toolbox activities have been introduced which enable students to work towards individual goals, following a sequential skills-based continuum. Our Inquiry Unit this term explores the seasons and weather through hands on experiences, role play and importantly links to our new structured vocabulary sessions. Students have also been involved in community events thoroughly enjoying the Easter Bonnet Parade and our Spanish Easter celebration involving cascarone smashing! In Term Two, we have also taken part in the ANZAC Day commemoration assembly and Mother’s Day Activities.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME

On Wednesday 21st May, the year 1-2 students participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS).

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. At 12pm, the year 1-2s listened to the story The Truck Cat being read by the author, Deborah Frenkel and LOVED it! We then got to draw the truck cat with the illustrator, Danny Snell. Check out some of our cool drawings!

If you’d like to listen to the recording of this year’s NSS, please find it at National Simultaneous Storytime 2025.
