What's happening around our school...

Foundation

In Mathematics, we have been learning about measurement and using the words long/er and short/er to compare lengths/heights. We learned to measure objects end to end, using informal units such as counters and popsticks for example. Recently we investigated numbers that are complementary in making 10 which we call ‘Friends of 10’.

Grades 1 & 2

In the Grade one classrooms, students have been busy researching facts about an animal. They worked hard to do a draft of their writing and then publish their information report.

They look fabulous, don’t they ?

This week our Grade 1 and 2 students have being learning about non-fiction texts in Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. They are learning how to write informational texts and practising writing for a sustained period of time.

The children explored our in non-fiction informational picture books, the information is presented in small 'bites' to hold the interest of the reader, while the information taken in total gives a comprehensive summary of each species, including breeding and feeding habits, physical characteristics, habitat, and other unique and quirky features.

The students choose a topic to write about such as an animal for their information report and thought about the purpose of ‘headings to guide the readers’ attention.

The children divided their informational text into 4 sections.

  • Introduction
  • Habitat
  • Diet
  • Appearance
  • Interesting Facts
  •  What makes the introduction interesting for the reader?
  • What are some interesting facts you learned in the introduction?
  • Editing for spelling and punctuation as you go.

Grades 3 & 4

This term, Grade 3 and 4 students have been diving into an inquiry unit focused on History, with a special emphasis on Commemorations and Australian Identity.

As part of their learning, they have explored the causes and consequences of change in the local Ringwood community. Over the past two weeks, students have enjoyed examining various maps of Ringwood to identify significant developments such as the growth in housing, the construction of Eastland Shopping Centre, Kalinda Primary School, and the urban forest.

They also loved looking at old photographs of Kalinda Primary School and discussing the many changes that have taken place over time.

Grades 5 & 6

Our Grade 5/6 students have been delving into the world of personal narratives. Through close analysis of a range of personal narrative texts, they’ve explored the techniques writers use to engage and influence their readers. This deep dive into personal narratives culminated in students writing and publishing their own personal stories. Students shared their work with confidence and pride during our Author’s Chair sessions.

Excitement is building as our Market Day project gathers steam! After successfully pitching their business ideas to their teachers, our enterprising Grade 5/6 students have been hard at work conducting market research. By designing and implementing surveys across all year levels, they’re gaining valuable insights into what their customers really want. With this data in hand, students are now shifting their attention to financial planning - learning how to estimate costs and manage a budget as they prepare to bring their business ideas to life.
