Year 10 & 11 Exams

by Ms Shareen Bottrell, Assistant Principal

Year 10 and 11 students will participate in the upcoming exam program from Monday 18 November to Wednesday 27 November. This will be followed by a week of Year 11 and 12 Jumpstart (Friday 29 Nov-Thursday 5 Dec), where students will meet their 2025 teachers, be introduced to their subjects, and receive holiday homework to help them prepare for the year ahead.

The purpose of the exams is multifaceted, aimed at enhancing both student development and educational outcomes. First, they serve to build students' confidence and refine their skills in exam techniques and settings, preparing them for future assessments. Additionally, the exams are designed to foster a culture of home study, encouraging regular revision and effective test preparation. They also aim to cultivate subject-specific exam skills, helping students become more adept in their individual disciplines.

Moreover, the exams provide an opportunity for students to familiarise themselves with the process and rules of sitting formal exams, giving them valuable experience before tackling the more demanding Unit 3 and 4 exams in year 12.  Through this, the exams also reinforce the learning culture at Box Hill High School, strengthening connections among students, parents, and the broader community.

Healthy Exam Preparation Tips

  1. Create a Calm Study Space: Set up a quiet, distraction-free environment for your child to study. Ensure the space is comfortable, but avoid areas like the bed or couch, which can encourage relaxation rather than focus.
  2. Minimise Distractions: Encourage your child to turn off phone notifications and disconnect from Wi-Fi unless it’s necessary for studying. Reducing digital distractions will help them maintain focus during study sessions.
  3. Promote Healthy Habits: Ensure your child is getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and staying physically active. Small activities like taking walks or stretching can help manage stress.
  4. Be Encouraging: Motivate your child to do their best without adding unnecessary pressure. Positive reinforcement and reassurance can boost their confidence.
  5. Support Active Recall Revision Strategies: Encourage your child to actively engage with their study material by summarising notes in their own words, creating flashcards, and testing themselves. Active recall is far more effective than passive reading or highlighting.
  6. Encourage Regular Breaks: Advise your child to follow a study routine that includes regular breaks—such as 25 minutes of focused study followed by a 5-minute break. This approach can help maintain concentration when they are revising.
  7. Help Prepare for Exam Day: Assist your child in preparing the night before the exam by ensuring they have all the necessary materials ready—such as pens, pencils, a calculator, a clear water bottle, and any other allowed items. A relaxed, organised routine will support them.
