Year 5
Hello from 5DL
We have had a wonderful start to Term 4 after a relaxing break!
This week we have started learning about persuasive writing and features of famous speeches, including Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. This is to help prepare Year 5 students for their leadership applications later this term.
Towards the end of last term we worked very hard on a literacy project – to create and publish picture story books for our buddy class. Students spent time learning about different morals present in children’s books and we thought about some ideas for morals that would be suitable for the Prep age group. We studied the characters in popular books and how they are used to add humour and other elements to the story. We also looked at different ways that illustrations can add to the story and help present the plot when meaningfully selected. Year 5 students spent weeks planning, writing multiple drafts, illustrating and publishing their books.
The finished products were absolutely amazing! We visited our prep buddies and read our stories to them. The Preps loved them so much, we created copies for them to keep in their classroom to read. We then held a Year 5 gallery morning, where we put the story books on display and visited the different classrooms to read each other’s stories. Some books were even given awards based off the children’s book of the year award, such as notable book, shortlisted book, best illustrations, teacher’s choice and principal’s choice award. All Year 5 students should feel so proud of their efforts.
