Faculty Report

Design & Techology

Design and Technology encourages students to think critically, and methodically problem solve. Watching the students work, grow, and develop this term has been nothing short of inspiring. They have challenged themselves to design and create fantastic work pieces, which are both practical and stylish.

This week, the ever-popular Year 8 Food Technology cake decorating lessons were embraced with the students’ usual zest and creativity. For homework, students researched and designed how they intended to decorate chocolate cakes. They then implemented their design during class with lashings of icing and sweet treats. The resulting cakes were magnificent, including unique themes and imaginative decorating techniques.

Designing my cake was such an enjoyable experience! It gave me a chance to get creative and think outside of the box. I learnt how important paying attention to detail is, and it helped me strengthen my problem-solving skills when something I planned to do does not work.

- Nishith Rajanbabu (Year 8)

Making and designing our cakes was the most enjoyable lesson in Food Technology for me. I learned important skills like measuring ingredients, baking techniques, and timing. The activity also helped me develop character strengths such as teamwork and patience, as I collaborated with others and waited for the cakes to bake and cool. Overall, it was a fun and valuable experience!

- Timothy Thomas (Year 8)

I really enjoyed making and decorating my cake! I had many fun and memorable experiences with all my friends.

- Cohen Masters (Year 8)

The cake baking activity was a fantastic experience, and the decorating was even more so! Although washing up was quite annoying, it helped develop my skills in washing up. If I were to name a character strength developed through this, I would say it would be perseverance, as much compromising was needed upon the creation and coloring of decor and frosting. Overall, it was an extremely enjoyable experience and I hope there can be more similar activities.

- Aaron Lor (Year 8)

I enjoyed the cake decorating and I learned how to ice a cake and work together. I got better at working together and forgiving my friend for spilling red icing everywhere.

- Jaylen Nelson (Year 8)

The Junior design and technology team have been using both metal and timber to create detailed projects including lamps, toolboxes, and a MicroBit steady hand game. Students used a range of tools and equipment to generate project components, including the CO2 laser cutters and 3D printers.

Congratulations to our Year 12 students on successfully completing their certificate courses in Furnishing and Engineering. The Students have produced high quality projects including firepits, hall tables and collapsible shovels. These items can be viewed at the Mazenod Visual Art Exhibition.

Thank you to all of the teachers and support staff for their efforts this year. We look forward to finishing the year strong and look forward to what next year has to bring. Finally, we would like to wish all of the students who are completing their VCE exams the best of luck.
