Deadly Science - Explanatory Texts
Over the first half of Term 2, the Year 5 and 6 learning community has been exploring the book Deadly Science: The Solar System, which introduces students to fascinating space concepts through an engaging mix of scientific information and First Nations perspectives. The text explores topics such as planets, stars, gravity and space exploration, helping students build both knowledge and curiosity about our universe.
Students enriched their learning through their excursion to the Victorian Space Science Education Centre, where they participated in the Journey to Mars program and applied their understanding in a real-world context. Back in the classroom, they combined these experiences to develop their writing skills, focusing on creating explanatory texts.
In class, students learnt about the key features of explanatory writing, including clear introductions, logically ordered information, cause-and-effect language, technical vocabulary and the use of diagrams or examples to support their ideas. It has been wonderful to see students apply their knowledge to produce detailed, well-structured and informative pieces that showcase both their scientific understanding and writing skills.
