The Power of Words

In a world filled with constant communication — from face-to-face conversations to text messages and social media posts — it can be easy to overlook the impact our words have on those around us.

The words we choose every day can influence how people feel, how they respond, and even how they think about themselves.

Research in neuroscience tells us that language is far more powerful than simply a way to share information. Words can trigger emotional responses, influence our wellbeing, and shape the way our brains process experiences. In other words, the way we speak to others — and to ourselves — truly matters.

When we hear a word, our brains don't just process its meaning. Different words can activate different parts of the brain, influencing emotions, memories and even physical responses. Positive words such as kind, hope, encouragement and love can promote feelings of trust, connection and motivation. They help create an environment where people feel safe, valued and ready to learn.

On the other hand, harsh or negative language can trigger stress responses in the brain. Repeated exposure to criticism, fear or discouragement can make it more difficult for people to feel confident, creative and resilient. Scientists have also found that our brains naturally pay more attention to negative experiences than positive ones, which means that a single hurtful comment can often linger much longer than several encouraging ones.

Perhaps most importantly, the words we say to ourselves have a significant impact. Our internal dialogue helps shape our beliefs and confidence. Thoughts such as “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good enough” can become self-fulfilling, while more positive and realistic self-talk such as “I’m still learning” or “I’ll keep trying” can build resilience and a growth mindset.

As a school community, we each have the opportunity to use language in ways that uplift, encourage and support one another. Whether we are speaking to our children, colleagues or family members, a kind word, a message of encouragement, or a simple expression of gratitude can have a lasting and meaningful impact. By choosing our words thoughtfully, we help create a world where everyone feels respected, connected, and empowered to thrive.

The next time you speak to your child, colleague, family member — or even yourself — remember that words carry power. Our words can inspire confidence, strengthen relationships and help shape a positive future, one conversation at a time.
