Resource Smart Schools Student Summit
On Wednesday ten members of our Sustainability Group met at CERES to participate in the Resource Smart School Student Summit. Students were guided to make an action plan to make change in an area Wales Street needs to improve. It was wonderful to meet other teachers and students from other schools, share ideas and brainstorm about issues together. Many thanks to Annabel, Mila V, Teresa, Natalie, Coco, Cate F, Florence, Emily J, Teodora and Ellen for being such engaged representatives of our school.
Nesting boxes
You may have noticed that we now have three nesting boxes that have been installed around our school. This has been an initiative that the Sustainability Leaders have been building towards since they started their action plan from last year’s Resource Smart School’s Summit. The nesting boxes were paid for through community donations to our Container Deposit Scheme.
A big thank you to everyone who donated, and to Erin Sanders (Elliot Sanders 1D) for making our nesting boxes, donating an extra one to our school and giving us great advice on how to install them properly. Hopefully, we will see some new additions to our Wales Street family soon!
Green waste bin
For the past year the Sustainability Group Leaders have been working on letters, a petition and a media campaign to ask Darebin council to give our school a green waste bin. Last week Wales street was very fortunate to receive a green bin from the Clark-Kyriakopoulos family (Coco Clark 5C) that we can now use for Weeding Wednesday, classroom composting and at our next Fete. Thank you so very much for your generosity!
Resource Smart School sign
It’s official! Last term RSS signed off on our two completed modules- Core and Biodiversity. Wales Street has received a sign we are now displaying proudly at our Wales Street entrance. We hope to add another star very soon for our completed waste module. With the completion of our Energy and Water modules we will be a five-star Resource Smart School. We are hoping to complete these by June next year.
Yours in sustainability,
Toby Marquette
