Dear Parents and Carers
As we head into the colder weeks of Term 2, a reminder to help keep our students comfortable and ready for learning:
Warm Clothing & Spare Clothes
Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. A named coat is essential for chilly mornings and outdoor play. For our younger students, we also recommend packing a change of socks, pants, and underwear in their bags. With wet play equipment and occasional muddy patches, this small preparation can save a lot of discomfort!
Minister’s Visit
On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome the Victorian Minister for Education, Ben Carroll, and our local member, Kat Theophanous, to our school. They were joined by our Regional Director and the Acting Executive Director of North Eastern Melbourne.
During their visit, they toured the school and spent time visiting a number of classrooms to see the wonderful learning taking place across our school community.
A highlight of the visit was hearing from Grade 6D, who wrote and presented a speech to the Minister and confidently asked a range of thoughtful questions. Our students represented the school beautifully and should be very proud of the way they spoke about their learning and our school community.
Education Week
Thank you for sharing and valuing Education Week as we came together to 'showcase our school'. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful WSPS community that shares our love and pride for our school!
National Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June)
From 27 May – 3 June, Wales Street Primary School will be recognising and celebrating National Reconciliation Week. This year’s theme, “All In,” reminds us that reconciliation is something we all contribute to through our actions, relationships, learning and conversations each day.
Throughout the week, students across the school will engage in a variety of activities, discussions, stories and learning experiences that help deepen understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives.
Across the school, students may explore:
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories and perspectives
• the meaning and importance of reconciliation
• respect for Country and Traditional Custodians
• ways we can build inclusive and respectful communities• how our everyday actions can contribute to positive change.
At WSPS, we are committed to continuing to embed Indigenous perspectives across our school community and creating opportunities for students to learn, reflect and grow together. Chris, one of our grade 6 teachers leads indigenous perspectives across our school with dedicated time given each week to focus on this work. He has also organised
Wear It Yellow Day on Monday June 1s to show our commitment to reconciliation and to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories.
Keeping Your Contact Details Up to Date
As the year progresses, family contact information can change. Whether you have a new address, updated phone number or different emergency contacts, please take a moment to ensure the details we have on file are current. Accurate information is essential so we can quickly reach parents and carers when needed and ensure you receive important school communications, including emergency SMS notifications.
If a student becomes unwell, is injured, or has not been collected at the end of the day, we will first attempt to contact a parent or carer before calling the nominated emergency contact. If any of your details have changed, please email the school with the updated information. If you are unsure what information we currently hold, our office staff will be happy to check for you.
