Year 5 Christmas Market

The College gym was buzzing on Tuesday afternoon as our Year 5 students hosted their 'What's My Business' Christmas Market. This event marked the culmination of their 'How We Organise Ourselves' unit, where we explored how compassion and understanding inspire positive action.

The students investigated entrepreneurial skills, created business plans, and designed products to sell at the market, with all profits going to ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service) Gifts of Grace.

We extend our gratitude to the teachers, students, and families who supported this service-learning project by attending the market and purchasing products made by our talented Year 5s. Thanks to everyone for making this event a huge success!

Year 5 Get Principled

The Year 5 students are nearly at the end of their 'How We Organise Ourselves' unit. They have explored how compassion and understanding can inspire us to take action and make a positive difference in the world. Students have been learning how they can use their talents and resources to help others as they explore how businesses function, including principled behaviours and financial literacy skills.

In class, we have been reflecting on the learner profile attributes most needed to run a successful business. Here are some reflections from our Year 5 students:

It is important to be principled during our business unit when we are making our products and when we are selling them. In this unit, we need to know how to lead and follow instructions and show responsibility when completing our part in the work. We need to collaborate effectively with our business team so we can run a successful stall.

- Anika 5

It is valuable to be principled when doing our new business unit as we all need to take responsibility for our significant roles in this task. To be principled means to show responsibility for the role you have been assigned and be reliable so you support the team you are working with.

- Aliena 5B

It is important to be principled because if you are not honest, it can backfire on you, and you can get into big trouble in business. You need to treat employees with respect. When you have a business, it is important to show integrity and build a good reputation so people will hear about your business and want to work with you.

We are supporting ALWS by donating to gifts of grace. The Year 5 students have chosen to create products to sell at a Christmas market. We formed groups and built a business, planned our products, pitched our ideas to our investors and then began the production process. Next week we will be selling our products at our Christmas market. During this unit we have demonstrated the learner profile attribute of principled by being good teammates when working collaboratively. We worked hard to design safe products and thought carefully about our community. We had to be really organised by keeping records of our expenditure and business plans. We also focused on forming and maintaining respectful relationships within our business groups.
