Bookswap 2024

Helping our kids grow into resourceful, avid readers is one of our goals in the library. We don’t just want them to read well, we want them to love it! This term we have looked at the impact reading for 20 minutes a day has on our literacy and wider learning. Did you know that helping kids read for 20 minutes a day exposes them to about 2 million (!?) words a year? They get to learn about words and worlds with you at home.

Making sure your children have great books to enjoy is one way we hope to keep them looking for those ‘just right’ books and reading over our Christmas break. Along with Chrissy gifts and visiting the local libraries, our first Bookswap aimed to help our students up-cycle. Bringing in good quality books they had finished reading and exchanging them with peers for something new extends the range and number of books they have access to at home.

The big day came and it was a hive of activity. Thank you to all the families for their generous donations – so many enticing, quality books! From Kindy to Year 6 students had the chance to swap their preloved books for new treasures and adventures. It seemed to be a big success but hopefully reading is the real winner.

Thank you for all you support of the library this year. Looking forward to more great adventures in 2025 and wishing you a peaceful Christmas break which hopefully includes time for you enjoy a good story or two.

Out and About with Kindy

On Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 5 our Kindergarten students put their knowledge about being a safe and responsible pedestrian, passenger and cyclist to the test. They passed with flying colours.

The engagement, energy and enthusiasm during our Road Safety Immersion Day was high. The students participated in four activities - riding scooters, driving their own designed and manufactured cardboard cars, catching our very own NCS bus, and finally creating and eating traffic light biscuits.

Special thanks to our bus drivers Mr McLennan and Mr Hefferan for navigating the streets of South Nowra, and making a special detour through McDonalds, not once but 6 times. We can report that the Macca's cookies purchased on each trip were put to good educational use in Maths lessons about making equal groups.

Year 4 visits the Bike Education Centre

On Friday 6 December, the two Year Four classes travelled to Campbelltown to a bike education centre to learn about bike maintenance, pedestrian safety and the rules of the road when riding a bike.

All of the students were enthusiastic and attentive, despite the fact that during most of the day, the temperature was in the mid 30's. After lunch, the mercury reached 38 degrees.

Each student was presented with a licence. They were given demerit points if a road rule was broken. We are very proud to say that nearly all students came home with their twelve points. There were a few students who began the day on three-wheeler bikes. They persevered and by the end of the day, they were riding two-wheeler bikes with the rest of the groups.

Year 4 represented themselves and our school extremely well.

Congratulations everyone. We are very proud of your positive attitude and great efforts despite difficult conditions.

Year 6 Lake Day

Year 6 spent a day at Burrill Lake learning how to work as a team on Party SUPs. They learned a few basic water safety rules and enjoyed conducting 'rescues' of their friends in the water. The day ended early due to a lightning storm.

Best Picnic Day Ever!

On the last morning of school, our Kindy, Year One and Year Two children set off with their teachers and intrepid teacher aides, heading to Huskisson for our shared Picnic Day.

The buses were filled with excited chatter as we looked forward to spending a great day, celebrating the end of term. On arrival we disembarked, heading to the park for morning tea. We then split up into groups, each one setting off to explore the beautiful park and beach areas.

There were games to play, equipment to explore, spiderwebs to climb and sand sculptures to create. There was no shortage of enthusiasm as we moved from one activity to another, always being mindful of others who were sharing this space. Our favourite was the sand sculpture group, where a great team of helpers made sure we had a never-ending supply of water to use in our creations.  We refuelled with lunch, then headed off for one last visit to the spiderweb park, before boarding buses to return to school. Once we packed our bags for the last time in 2024, we enjoyed an ice-block, while taking the time to share with our classmates our highlights of the year.

Our day was fantastic, and we would love to thank our caring, kind and AMAZING teachers and teacher aides. Thank you, too, to Mrs Stratton and Mrs Donald for coming along to play with us – we had the BEST DAY EVER!

Years 3-6 Picnic Day

On Wednesday 11 December 2024, around 180 students from Years 3-6 attended our annual Primary Picnic Day end of year celebrations.

After travelling to Vincentia, we spent about an hour at Plantation Point Park, playing games and having fun together in the 'great outdoors' at beautiful Jervis Bay. Students and staff had fun using the play equipment, playing games and sports activities together. Soon it was time to get on the buses again and take the short drive to Bay and Basin Leisure Centre.

From mid morning to early afternoon we had use of the leisure pool, lap pool and water slides. The canteen was especially popular with students buying hot chips and wedges to share, as well as drinks and ice blocks. Much fun was had by our students, playing games with friends in the pools and hurtling down the waterslide at a rapid rate!

Thanks to all our hardworking teachers and teachers aides who helped make this day very memorable.

End-of-Year Celebrations

A number of end-of year celebrations took place over the last fortnight of school, including our Primary and Secondary Celebration Assemblies as well as Year 6 Graduation and Thanksgiving Evening.

These were all wonderful events celebrating the exceptional talents and dedication of our students. Thank you to the parents, carers and other family members who joined us. Thank you for being part of our school community and supporting our students.

We are truly thankful to our amazing God for His abundant blessings on our school.
