Year 9 MyOutdoor Sailing Camp
Two of our MyOutdoor groups recently embarked on an exciting sailing adventure to Geelong, where they had the opportunity to learn the ropes of sailing with the help of the Victorian Sailing School. Over two sunny days in the beautiful Geelong Harbour, students learned the basics of sailing a small boat, including key skills like tacking, jibing, and steering with the tiller and rudder.
Guided by experienced instructors, students quickly gained confidence on the water, mastering new techniques and discovering the thrill of sailing. In addition to sailing, the trip provided an excellent opportunity for students to develop their independence and teamwork. Staying at a local caravan park, students were responsible for budgeting and preparing their own meals—skills they had been practicing in class leading up to the camp.
The experience was both educational and fun, providing a hands-on learning environment that combined outdoor adventure with practical life skills. Congratulations to all the students for their enthusiasm and teamwork during this memorable trip!
Year 9 Career Immersion Day – A Day of Exploration and Future Planning!
On Wednesday, 5th of March , Doncaster Secondary College kicked off the first Year 9 Career Immersion Day, Cluster Day, for the year, providing an exciting and engaging opportunity for our students to explore their future career paths. This event was designed to give students a comprehensive look at the various pathways available to them and help them start planning for their future careers.
The day began with a dynamic workshop led by Crazy Ideas College, in partnership with IBM. This session focused on goal-setting, encouraging students to think about their aspirations and how they can set achievable goals to get there. Students were challenged to reflect on their passions and how these can guide them as they move forward in their educational journey.
Next, the students participated in their Morrisby career profiling sessions. The Morrisby tool offers valuable insights into career options that align with each student’s natural strengths and interests. By completing the profiling, students gained a deeper understanding of themselves and the many career paths they could pursue, helping them make more informed decisions about their future.
In the final session of the day, students learned about Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects, an essential part of the senior school curriculum. The session covered key topics such as how to choose the right VET subject and the application process for those students interested in pursuing VET pathways. This informative session gave students the confidence and knowledge to make well-informed decisions about their academic future.
To wrap up the day, students enjoyed a delicious free sausage sizzle at lunch, providing a chance to unwind and reflect on the valuable experiences of the day.
Overall, the Year 9 Career Immersion Day was a fantastic success, giving our students the tools, insights, and inspiration they need to start planning for their future careers. We look forward to continuing this journey of career exploration and future planning with our students throughout the year.
