Learning Areas 2024 wrap up

Food & Technology Learning Area

What a busy time it has been during the last two weeks of the school year! Food and Technology staff and students have been working hard to get the kitchen clean and ready to go for 2025.

Whilst all the cleaning has been happening, Grade 5s from local schools were invited to experience a day at Greensborough College. Using the microwave, students made the classic chocolate mug-cake and loved their experience.

Grade 6 orientation day occurred on the 10th of December, and students were involved in creating their own designs for gingerbread biscuits to get into the festive season. Students were involved in piping and decorating their biscuits using the stencils and designs they have developed. Fun was had by all!

Looking forward to having you all back in our pristine kitchens in the new year. Best wishes to all for the holiday season. Enjoy your well-deserved holidays!

Languages Learning Area

At the start of term 2, Australia and Greensborough College have welcomed me for my very first overseas experience. Coming from a small town, I found my space in a city whose dimensions I will never comprehend, I found myself comfortable in a place where I had no roots, and, eventually, I felt I belonged. Melbourne, Co.As.It and Greensborough College gave me an opportunity, a place to escape and self-determine.

I feel grateful to have been assigned to this school. I met welcoming and helpful teachers, I worked with incredible students that helped me get used to the classroom environment, in spite of everything being so new to me.

I was especially lucky to meet and train professionally alongside Jacqueline, who has been my reference point throughout this year, who has supported and inspired me with her passion for Italian and for everything she is involved in at school. She has taught me so much and I’ll make sure to bring all that home with me.

Despite this critical time for second language learning in Victoria and Australia in general, I hope that Greensborough College will continue to guarantee space for Italian and languages, and I also hope that the understanding of how beneficial the acquisition of a second language in a student's overall education will spread. Studying a second language tears down all barriers of communication with others, but it also sharpens the individual's linguistic and cognitive skills in their mother tongue, as well as their cultural awareness, resulting in an ever-improving ability to communicate in their first language. Also, the study of a second language is what allowed me to be here and experience these extraordinary 8 months, so… it is all worth the effort, if you ask me!

Again, I want to thank the school for being so kind to me, I will always cherish the memory of this experience and wish everyone a good end of the school year and good luck for the next! In bocca al lupo!

Arts Learning Area

This year has been a fantastic one for the Arts and Music Learning Areas at Greensborough College, showcasing the incredible creativity, talent, and dedication of our students and staff.

The annual Greensborough College Art Show celebrated student achievements across all Visual Arts subjects, with highlights including intricate Junior Printmaking and Ceramics, VCE Visual Communication folios, and Media projects from Year 9 and 10. We displayed new units like Fashion Design, featuring stunning upcycled garments, and a Puppetry unit in Drama, where students crafted original puppets. The evening was enriched by the musical talents of VCE Music students Ethan Barry and Amir Elhaj.

Term 2 saw our Year 11 and 12 Visual Communication Design students inspired by the Top Designs exhibition at Melbourne Museum, while Year 9 Media and Film students explored the impact of screen culture at ACMI.  Our school also transformed as we welcomed a new family to take the stage in the Production of The Addams Family. Under the talented direction of GJ Productions, the hilarious and heartfelt performances of the students were a delight to see blossom on the stage.

In music, the Music Development Program alongside the Instrumental Music Program brought exciting opportunities. Early in Term 3 saw the launch of Greensborough LIVE!, our annual music concert, showcasing ensembles such as the Year 7 and 8 Bands, Rock Band, Choir, and guitar ensembles.

Students experienced enriching events, including a Balinese Gamelan workshop, a trip to Wicked the Musical, and a Choir performance celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Diamond Valley Learning Centre. Our Year 7 Music students embraced the Music Development Program with enthusiasm, while Year 12 Music students impressed in their performance exams, showcasing their dedication and growth.

Design & Technology Learning Area

Year 7/ 8

The year 7’s learnt how to combine different materials using different fasteners and joining methods to build a box of their choice with a unique design and how to build a key tag with a CNC design of their choice for plastics. Yr 8 students completed sliding lid rebate joint boxes and heated/moulded acrylic plastic to create a desk tidy.

Year 9/10

In year 9/10 Woodwork the students produced different toolboxes, tables, draws, cabinets and boxes with unique designs, features, and colours on them using a wide variety of different timbers and wood joinery techniques.

VET Automotive

In Vet Automotive this year the students produced some outstanding results rebuilding single, 6 cylinder and V8 motors from used parts to well - tuned running motors. The students modified the motors for more power and efficiency, wired them up, built or modified existing motor stands and connected fuel tanks. They also completed a variety of other Automotive, electrical, electronic and engineering tasks and serviced multiple vehicles using a wide range of diagnostic equipment and hand tools. An excursion to Nissan high performance centre was also a highlight.

Humanities Learning Area

We close our books on another exciting year in the Humanities domain. Here is a brief summary on some key takeaways from Term 4.

During this final term, our Year 7s conducted a fieldwork survey of Watsonia. Students were active in observing the different amenities on offer – particularly the lack of accessible water taps on what was a rather hot day. Year 8 students completed a unit on Changing Nations, learning about migration and megacities across the world. Year 9s concluded a unit on Civics & Citizenship, developing an interest in our legal system and Australian politics.

Our Year 10s concluded their studies in Business & Economics, History, and Rights and Wrongs. Students competed in the stock market, explored civil rights movements, and investigated topical issues and the legal and ethical perspectives which surround them. Students began their VCE subjects through early commencement, and we look forward to guiding and supporting these students through their continued journey in Humanities.

Our Year 12 students in Revolutions, Legal Studies, and Business Management tackled their exams with determination and perseverance. We wish them all the best, and hope that they retain the same curiosity and keen interest that has kept them invested in Humanities as they embark on the next chapters of their lives.

For our 2025 Year 12 cohort, remember to take some time to rest over the break (ahem, and to do your holiday homework, please!), to reflect on your accomplishments in 2024, before getting ready to strap in for a final big year.

We hope everyone enjoys their holidays and is back ready and refreshed in 2025. I hope your curiosity guides you to investigate something new over the break, whether it’s dipping in on ancient cultures, languages, archaeological discoveries, landmarks, or mythology.
