Calm Corner

As we wrap up 2024, we're excited to reflect on the success of our newest addition – Calm Corner!

Launched this year, Calm Corner has quickly become a go-to space every Thursday at lunchtime, run in collaboration with the Wellbeing staff. It’s been a peaceful retreat for students to unwind and recharge amidst their busy schedules. From crafting and colouring to puzzles, we've engaged in a variety of mindful activities, while also connecting over our interests, anxieties, and goals. The calming environment has encouraged students to engage all five senses, enjoying soothing scents, sights, and sounds. It's been wonderful to see so many students stop by for a quick break before heading into period 5, find quiet time, or simply enjoy the tranquil space with the Wellbeing team.

Introducing Calm Corner has been a highlight of the year, and we can’t wait to see how it evolves in 2025!

DEBT

On December 3rd, Greensborough College celebrated International Day of Persons with Disability. The event was a resounding success, marked by a range of engaging activities that fostered inclusivity and understanding.

One of the highlights of the day was a Kahoot quiz created by the Disability Education Beloved Team (DEBT) students, which was enthusiastically participated in by all Year 7-9 students. The quiz was designed to educate students about disability awareness and promote empathy towards individuals with disabilities.

In collaboration with the wellbeing team, students also took the initiative to create and display informative posters around the school. These posters highlighted the importance of disability rights and the need for an inclusive society.

The collective efforts of the DET team, wellbeing team, and students made International Day of Persons with Disability a memorable and impactful event at Greensborough College. The school community is committed to promoting inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their abilities. We look forward to growing DEBT in 2025.

Gardening Club

In the garden we dig and play,

Planting seeds to brighten our day.

We water, we nurture, and watch them grow,

Herbs, veggies and blooms in a row.

We renew the beds, fertilize with care

Harvesting herbs to dry and share.

At Watsonia library, we volunteer,

Making new friends during the year.

In Cooking class, we chop and cook,

Seasonal veggies, the best in the book.

We practice sustainability, waste no food,

Growing fresh produce, with joy and mood!

From seed to plate, we all have fun,

Together, we grow – our work is never done!

Breakfast Club

The wellbeing team with the help of Mrs Marangos and Mr Hitchman have provided students the opportunity to engage in our Breakfast Club, which has run every Tuesday and Friday morning over the year providing students with breakfast when they arrive to school. This initiative has quickly become a beloved part of our school community, providing students with a nourishing start to their day.

Along with serving up warm cheese toasties, Breakfast Club also fosters a friendly environment where students can socialise and unwind before school starts. It’s been awesome to see new friendships forming and familiar faces gathering each week, and we look forward to continuing this next year!

Rainbow Space

2024 has been another fantastic year for our Rainbow Space.  Every Tuesday our college offers a space for LGBTQIA+ students, their friends and allies to meet. Rainbow Space offers students a range of activities including craft, music and movie viewings.  One particular favourite of this year was viewing the Netflix adaptation of Heartstopper

Some of the other highlights this year involved Wear It Purple Day and IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia).  The wider school community showed their support by wearing a ‘touch of purple’ in their uniform.  Our Wellbeing Team and staff helped to create an inclusive environment through activities in the Library, a Quiz and more.

Finally, our Year 10 cohort also participated in a workshop from Minus 18.  Minus 18 assist students in respectfully supporting their queer peers.  Our engaging presenter, Ben helped prepare our students for the realities of the wider community and the appropriate way to interact with them.  Our Rainbow Space team looks forward to another great year in 2025!

D&D Club

2024 has absolutely flown by, and it has been another successful year for Greensborough College’s Dungeons & Dragons club. We currently have two groups playing, and it has been spectacular to see the number of students grow as we have continued throughout the year. The group has become so popular that we now book out a term or two in advance!

One of the highlights of this club has been students hanging out and getting to know fellow students from different year levels. This club has been a great opportunity to build friendships and connections between year levels as students discuss their shared passion, with groups from Years 7 to 11 joining in.

The game is a great way to practice thinking on your feet, being creative, and have a laugh. It is a game that lets you answer the question: “How would you survive a zombie apocalypse?” and then actually test out your ideas with your friends.

Keep an eye out for posters around the school announcing details in 2025!
