Bullying. No Way!

This week we have been learning about bullying no way week, from classroom activities to odd socks day, we learnt about ways to ask for help and ways to be an upstander.

First let's talk about being an upstander. Being an upstander is to see something happening, for example a kid in your class being excluded and then going up to them to comfort them or telling the bully to stop. Now lets talk about asking for help, there are many ways to ask for help including talking to a trusted adult or friend, sometimes it is hard to ask for help because you feel embarrassed or you feel like you are snitching on your friend but you should never be afraid to ask because there will always be someone who would love to help you.

Now let's talk about being a bystander, a bystander is someone who watches something happen and does not do anything, most of the time it is because if they tell them off they will be next, however sometimes it is because students don't feel like they have enough power especially if they are talking about an older kid.

Another thing we learnt about was labels and problems at home, labels are when somebody does something wrong (which isn't ok) gets called a bully, this can also make them feel bad, also some of the reasons certain people are mean is because they have something going on at home.

In conclusion, celebrating Bully No Way Week is an amazing celebration that impacts the lives of many young people.

Bullying No Way Week

This week we have been doing some special lessons about bullying no way week, ways to deal with bullying, how to be an upstander and what to do if someone else is being bullied. This year's theme was Be Bold, Be Kind, Speak Up, so the lessons were based on what it means to be upstander and what rights they have when they’re online from online games to social media and cyberbullying.

We are holding a special schoolwide competition where each grades create and submit videos about upstanders and bullying in teams of three or four and the wellbeing team will pick one video per grade and that team will win 20 points each for their house and will have their video shown at assembly next year.

In year five they made a question box where they anonymously wrote situations that have to do with bullying they've been in and their teacher read them out anonymously, and the whole class worked through what they could do in that situation.

Last Wednesday on August 13th students were encouraged to wear two different socks or odd socks. This was to celebrate the fact that everyone is different and we should be celebrating our differences not tearing each other down.
