Year 3 MAV Games Day 2025
Derrimut Primary School
Our Galilee Mathletes Maths club has been a great success so far. We had a soft launch at the end of Term 2 with numbers steadily increasing. We have focussed our club on the Year 3 to Year 6 students with aspirations to expand to the lower year levels in the future. These sessions take place on Wednesday during eating time and the first half of lunchtime.
The focus is working on maths in a collaborative, team manner which values the fun in problem solving. Our year 3, year 4 and year 5/6s teams focus on how they prove a myriad of math solutions articulating the steps involved in the process.
Rohan T, Éadaoin N, Natasha C and Aurelia D represented Galilee RCPS in our inaugural attendance of the Maths Association of Victoria (MAV) games day, held at Derrimut Primary School.
A Maths Games Day is an opportunity for students to:
- develop their mathematical talents and thinking skills in a setting where maths is regarded as fun and worthwhile
- work with like-minded students from a diverse range of schools
- participate in mathematical activities without the usual class room pressures
- win prizes and rewards
- get excited about maths!
Our Year 3 team demonstrated amazing creativity, efficiency and group work. Lateral thinking is the focus that MAV highlights in the tasks.
The students had a great time playing maths games for points against students from approximately 20x schools that attended. A maths relay and a 45 minute problem solving contest took place to which the team was challenged and had to think laterally to complete the challenges within the time frame.
A particular highlight for the team was completing a dominoes puzzle task for extra points to which adjudicators gave back our incorrect solutions with 14 minutes remaining on the clock. By a lucky coincidence, Éadaoin had a packet of dominoes as a prize from an earlier game to which the team eagerly opened and used to move the pieces as a problem solving strategy. Rohan sprinted back to the adjudicators table to return the amended solution just as the timer finished.
The team were ecstatic to take home first place in their first competition. We eagerly look forward to our students having opportunities to represent Galilee in later competitions in the coming weeks.

Digital Technologies at Galilee
Term 3 is already back to an exciting start in the Digital Technologies landscape!
This week, 11–15th August 2025, is Australia’s ‘Bullying No Way!’ week. The students have been exploring how to identify, stand up to and prevent bullying in our school community.
With 44% of Australian young people reporting having had a negative online experience, it is paramount that we as a school community are supporting our students with navigating the digital landscape. In educational settings, we often see online safety concerns arise from group chats and gaming platforms. Please stay aware of who your children are communicating with, the group chats they are part of, and the topics being discussed online.
Please also ensure your children are accessing age-appropriate content online. Exposure to misinformation or conspiracy theories can be distressing and cause unnecessary anxiety for young people. At Galilee, we are committed to future focused education- including supporting our students in distinguishing between facts and beliefs circulating online. We appreciate your ongoing support as we continue to build a cyber safe community. Please review our Galilee Cyber Safety Tipsheet below for more information:
Digital Technologies Learning:
Last term, we partnered with Prep and Year 1 for peer teaching and buddy sessions, helping our younger students harness technology in their learning. Together, they explored data collection and representation through images, used green screen technology to create engaging videos, and delved into coding with ‘Scratch’.
In Years 5 and 6, students have been bringing their creativity to life through a range of innovative projects; from designing websites and producing green screen videos to exploring the rise of artificial intelligence in their discussion writing.
This term, students will be exploring: coding, bee bots, machine learning, use of generative AI and much more! We can’t wait to see what our students create!
Chess Club!
In Term 3, Chess Club will be continuing to run on a Tuesday afternoon from 3.25-4.30.
For more information about Chess Club, please see the enrolment form and contact Felix at felixchandler@mindfulchess.com.au.

Year 4 Writing
Students in Year 4 have been engaged in writing different forms of poetry, including Haiku and Blackout. Here are a few examples of their Blackout poems.
With Blackout poetry, you take a piece of text, circle words that would make a poem when read together, and create a pattern on top of the remaining text. Here are some of the Year 4 results!
Beachside Soccer Reports - BOYS
On Monday we had our school soccer team head off to a Beachside tournament to compete against the other district winners of their school’s district
We had 2 pool games and then 2 finals games.
We came up against Christ Church Grammar who we won well against, 4-0 and the boys were up and running. Next we played King David where we showed some fantastic football skills, scoring 7 goals to their 0.
We finished our Pool on top, a terrific effort.
Heading into the finals with lots of confidence, we came up against South Melbourne Primary School. They finished 2nd in their pool and were very strong.
A back and forth first half with SMPS scoring first but a late goal made the score 1 all at the half. The second half was exactly like the first, SMPS scored first but a late intercept and GOOOOOAL saw Galilee bring it back to a draw at the final siren.
Progressing to the final due to finishing higher in our Pool, we played Oakleigh South PS. This team was very good.
Whilst the boys' effort was high, the pressure was super, we fell short 0-3.
Well done on making it this far! A wonderful effort
Beachside Soccer Reports - Girls
On Tuesday we had our Girls school soccer team head off to a Beachside tournament to compete against the other district winners of their school’s district
We had 2 pool games and then 2 finals games.
Coming up against Firbank straight up, the girls class and teamwork was on show. Scoring a 3-0 win to start their campaign. Next was St. Peter’s Bentleigh East, the team that won it last year. This was a strong, tough battle all game but unfortunately St. Peters scored in the first 10 seconds. Galilee going down 0-1.
Finishing second in our pool we would play St. Joseph’s Elsternwick. Another game where we showed great teamwork and class but just couldn’t score until with the score 0 all and needing a win to progress, a late touch saw the ball go into the back of the net and the siren going only moment later! A terrific win and a win the girls deserved.
OFF TO THE FINAL!
Coming up against St.Peter’s again, it was going to be tough. They scored first but the girls didn’t give up, being down 0-1 at the half. A goal early helped the girls get it back to 1-1 but St. Peter’s were able to quickly get that goal back and end up winner 2-1.
Our girls did a terrific job all day and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day.
