Celebrating science at Government House

On Monday evening, our Sustainability Prefect, Kate Hynes (Year 12), had the privilege of attending a special reception at Government House to mark the official opening of National Science Week.

The event brought together aspiring science students and their teachers from across southern Tasmania, along with representatives from the University of Tasmania.

Kate, accompanied by St Mary's College Secondary Teacher and Sustainability Officer Mrs Karen Walter, engaged with scientists working in a variety of fields, connected with the inspiring Young Tassie Scientists and networked with fellow students exploring future pathways in science for 2026 and beyond.

Kate is currently studying Biology 3, Outdoor Leadership 3, Housing and Design 3 and Personal Health and Wellbeing 2.

She hopes to pursue paramedicine in Hobart next year, and we wish her every success in her future endeavours!

Curious minds, changing climates

Mrs Karen Walter's Year 9/10 Biology elective students today welcomed Dr Chloe Lucas from the University of Tasmania, who led an engaging workshop on climate change as part of the Curious Climate Schools project.

Chloe's recent work focusses on how communication and cultural context drives social adaptation to extreme weather events including bushfires.

She also leads Curious Climate Schools, an award-winning climate communication project that asks students what they want to know about climate change.

50 days to go | Congratulations, Year 12!

The countdown is officially on! Our amazing Year 12 cohort has entered the final 50 days of their school journey at SMC, and we couldn't be prouder.

To celebrate this special milestone, our students brought the ultimate Thursday throwback to life, dressing up as their childhood selves. From fairy wings and tutus to superhero capes and toolbelts, the outfits were a nostalgic reminder of how far they've come.

The morning was made even sweeter with an amazing cake, lovingly made by our very own Mrs Kate Marr, Learning Support Officer and baking superstar.

Here's to the final stretch, filled with fun, friendship and maybe even a few more sweet treats. The excitement for what lies ahead is definitely building, and we're cheering our Year 12s on every step of the way.

Work Experience | The latest from the job front

It was back to the Junior School for Alice Bakes (Year 12), who recently completed a rewarding week of work experience in the Prep classroom at Dominic College.

Alice had a great week gaining insights into early childhood education. A special highlight was being mentored by former SMC teacher, Mrs Nikki Shanny, who kindly took Alice under her wing, making the experience all the more meaningful through a lovely shared connection.
