Garden Club

Mr Jorgen Choong

Pic of the Week

Siena’s mum shared how much Siena F (3G) is loving Garden Club and how she always comes home full of excitement to talk about her weekly gardening adventures. Siena recently brought home a harvested sweet potato, which her Nonna cooked up for a delicious family meal. It was such a special experience for Siena to see something she helped grow make its way all the way to her family's dinner table. Siena’s family sent a big thank you to the Garden Club team for all the time, energy, and care that goes into making the club so rewarding for the kids!

Super-Fast Soil Magic in the Garden Club!

Have you ever seen leftover dinner turns into rich garden soil in just one single day? It sounds like magic, but thanks to Oliver Williams (3G) and his awesome parents, it’s totally real!

Oliver’s family has kindly donated a batch of super-fast compost made by a high-tech kitchen machine. Inside this gadget, millions of microscopic helper bugs called aerobic microorganisms go to work at lightning speed. They munch through leftover food scraps and turn them into dark, nutrient-rich plant food in a mind-blowing 24 hours!

Usually, normal garden compost takes months to make, but these tiny, microscopic superheroes do the job overnight. We’re going to use this high-tech "turbo-dirt" to feed our club plants this week and give them a giant boost.

A massive Garden Club thank you to Oliver and his family for sharing this brilliant gift with our school!

Finally Finished Harvesting

Spades away! Our amazing Garden Club members have officially finished harvesting our second sweet potato bed, digging up every sweet treasure hidden beneath the dirt.

Now that the beds are clear, we’re switching into super-charger mode to get the garden ready for its next big adventure:

·       Powering Up with Biomass: We’re adding fresh plant material and organic matter to the soil. Think of biomass as a big, healthy protein smoothie for the dirt it gives the soil all the nutrients it needs to grow strong plants next season!

·       Sweet Potato Babies: Bed number one is fully prepared and looking fresh. We took leafy cuttings from our original sweet potato plants and transplanted them into their cozy new home. It’s like creating a brand-new plant generation from the old one!

Take a peek at bed number one next time you walk past the Garden Club area to see if you can spot our new green shoots taking root.

Coffee Magic for Our Garden Soil!

A huge, leafy high-five to Gur Sewak for donating a massive batch of used coffee grounds to our school garden! Gur Sewak works hard running the 7-Eleven at Strathfield, and instead of letting those coffee grounds go to waste, he saved them just for us.

Did you know that used coffee grounds are like superhero food for garden dirt? They are packed with nitrogen, which helps our plants grow big, leafy green leaves. Worms also absolutely love munching on coffee grounds, so adding them to our beds is like throwing a giant party for our underground wriggly friends!

A massive THANK YOU to Gur Sewak for supporting our young growers and helping our garden thrive!

When is the Garden Club?

Garden Club happens on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, right after the gates open. We meet at the bubblers on the Churchill Avenue side of the school.

Garden Club is completely FREE to join! It's a great opportunity to learn to be a lateral thinker with limited resources, get first pick after a harvest, and see some fascinating creatures.

The information shared here is based on our experiences and knowledge, but we are not gardening experts. Think of it as friendly advice from one garden lover to another.
