Foundation

Foundation End of Term 3 

What a wonderful and action-packed term it has been in Foundation! From celebrating NAIDOC Week at Rangeview with a meaningful First Nations incursion, and building our understanding of Cyber Safety, to marking 100 Days of School, dancing the night away at the Student Disco and bringing our favourite stories to life for the Book Week Parade. We also made a splash during Foundation Swimming Week! With so much happening both in and out of the classroom, it’s no surprise the term has flown by! 

Along the way, our Foundation students have continued to learn, grow, make new friends and build their confidence as they take on new challenges. We are so proud of everything they have achieved this term and the enthusiasm, curiosity and joy they bring to their learning each day. 

Literacy 

Foundation students have been busy building their literacy skills and growing in confidence. Through our Little Learners Love Literacy program, we have been learning about double letters and suffixes such as -s, -es and -ed, while using our taught sounds to read bigger and trickier words, including CCVC, CVCC and CCVCC words. We have also started exploring digraphs such as sh, ch and th. 

Our little learners are continuing to work hard with their take-home books, practising how to decode and blend words, read with fluency and expression, and understand and talk about what they have read. During lessons, we have used a range of well-known children’s stories to introduce the concept of making text-to-self connections. Students have been encouraged to think deeply about the stories we read and reflect on how the characters, events and experiences connect to moments in their own lives. 

It has been wonderful to see our students becoming more confident, capable and enthusiastic readers. Every new sound, word and book is another step towards becoming a lifelong reader!  

This term in Foundation Writing, students have continued to develop their understanding of the important elements that make a sentence, including using finger spaces, capital letters and punctuation. We have introduced writing on Victorian dotted thirds, using our Handwriting Cat to help students correctly size and position their letters through targeted handwriting lessons and everyday writing activities. 

Students have also been expanding their ability to write weekend recounts, learning to include who, what, when and where to add more detail and make their writing interesting for the reader. As part of our Literacy learning about making connections to texts, students have also enjoyed writing about personal connections they can make to the stories we read. Across all writing experiences, we continue to encourage students to share their ideas, add exciting details and reread their sentences to check that their writing makes sense. 

Talk Time 

This term, students have begun presenting short speeches during our class Talk Time sessions. Throughout Term 3, students explored a variety of engaging topics, including ‘About My Holidays’, ‘My Favourite Book’ and ‘A Place I Have Visited in Australia’. Through these presentations, students have developed their confidence in speaking clearly in front of an audience and sharing their ideas and experiences. They have also strengthened their understanding of how to be a respectful and attentive audience member by listening carefully and asking meaningful questions about each speaker’s presentation. We look forward to another term of exciting Talk Time topics and continuing to build these important skills in preparation for our Public Speaking Competition early in Term 4. 

Mathematics 

This term in Mathematics, we have been busy developing our measurement skills through lots of hands-on and practical learning experiences. We compared and described length, mass and duration in everyday situations. We have explored addition, learning different strategies for combining quantities and explaining our thinking. We practised sharing cookies fairly between groups, but the most exciting part was eating the cookies! We have been learning about teen numbers, exploring how numbers from 11 to 19 are made and represented as one 10 and some more, and developing our confidence with counting, ordering and recognising these numbers. One of the highlights of our mathematics learning was celebrating 100 Days of School! We enjoyed a whole week of fun, 100-themed activities that helped us explore, count and represent the number 100 in lots of creative ways.  It has been wonderful to see the children becoming more confident mathematicians and developing their ability to share their mathematical thinking. 

Integrated Studies 

This term, Foundation students enjoyed a rich Integrated Studies unit exploring Australia. Each week, there was great excitement as students discovered a new state or territory, explored famous landmarks and native animals and participated in engaging activities that allowed them to apply and consolidate their new learning. They also developed an understanding of where we are located within Victoria and enthusiastically shared their experiences and prior knowledge about Australia. This learning extended into Talk Time, where students shared a place they had visited in Australia, and Mathematics, where they were introduced to Australian coins, their values and the native animals featured on them. It has been wonderful to see the students’ curiosity, confidence and knowledge grow throughout this engaging unit! 

Wellbeing  

Wellbeing has continued to be an important focus in Foundation this term as we support students to feel safe, connected and confident at school. Students have explored a range of social stories centred around our school-wide expectations and values of Respect, Kindness and Resilience. Through these stories, students have strengthened their understanding of how they can demonstrate our school values and make safe, kind and respectful choices across all areas of the school. We have also continued working through the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons and the Cyber Safety Project curriculum. We are so pleased with the way our Foundation students have embraced this learning and developed important social and emotional skills that will support them throughout their schooling journey. 

Level 1

Level 1 Term 3 Learning in My Level 

What an exciting term we have had in Year 1! Students embraced every opportunity to learn, explore, celebrate and make wonderful memories together. We all enjoyed dressing up and sharing our love of books during the Book Week Parade, celebrating 101 Days of School, learning how to stay safe online during our Cyber SafetyIncursion, and discovering new things on our excursion to Melbourne Aquarium. Students also enjoyed Cupcake Day, developed their confidence and skills during swimming, and celebrated our learning and achievements on LLLL Celebration Day. 

Literacy 

In Reading, we continued with the ‘Little Learners Love Literacy’ phonics program. We have explored split digraphs- where two letters make a vowel sound but a consonant splits them. Examples include a_e in cake, e_e in delete, and i_e in kite. We extend our grateful thanks to the parent helpers who supported our students each week this term; they have enjoyed showing how much they have progressed with their reading.  

Level 1 also had fun celebrating their literacy learning at the ‘A Huge Day’ Celebration. Students rotated through activities related to different sounds, enjoyed a year-level picnic, shared photos of their pets, and ended the day with a movie.  

In Writing, students learned about the features and structure of procedure texts. They created a recipe for Wombat Stew, explaining the materials and steps and wrote about how to get ready for school. Students explored how to persuade others as they wrote their ‘If I had a superpower’ speeches, which they will share during Talk Time. 

Mathematics  

In Mathematics, we continue to use a variety of hands-on materials, games and group work to explore different concepts. This term, we focused on multiplication and division, exploring the related mathematical language, strategies, and the relationship between the two operations.  

Wellbeing 

In Wellbeing, students continued to develop their social and personal skills around being safe and respectful at playtime and in the classroom.  They have explored help-seeking, identifying when and who to ask for help. Students participated in a whole-level cybersafety incursion that taught them to consider their emotions while online. 

Integrated Studies 

This term, students learned about water. Students investigated water as a habitat by going to the Melbourne Aquarium for the SeaLife excursion. They also learned about the water cycle, how water is essential for living things to survive and grow and how to use water responsibly. 

Level 2

Level 2, End of Term 3 Newsletter 2026 

As the term comes to a close, we can reflect upon what an eventful time it has been, full of learning and fun.  

We started off the term celebrating NAIDOC Week, where we learned about some significant First Nations people and had a special visit from an Aboriginal musician, Scott Darlow. We enjoyed stories and song.  

Our Integrated Learning unit about ‘Water’ included lots of engaging learning opportunities. A highlight was our excursion to Sea Life, where we marveled at the diverse marine life, from colourful coral reefs to majestic sharks. Interactive exhibits and informative presentations deepened their understanding of ocean ecosystems and the importance of conservation. Back in the classroom, students have continued to learn about marine animals and practised writing information reports. We conducted some science experiments, including one where we replicated the water cycle, observing the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.   

Some Level 2 students had a blast at Hoop Time, a fun basketball clinic with lessons and games. They practised dribbling, passing, and shooting with help from friendly coaches. The children also played some exciting matches, showing off their new skills. It was a great way for them to get active, learn teamwork and enjoy playing basketball together. 

As part of our eSafety learning, Level 2 students had a visit from the CyberSafety Project where they were immersed in practical scenarios and supported to consider appropriate actions to ensure safe use of digital devices.  

In Week 7, we headed to the pool to undertake essential swimming, water safety and survival skills, through a structured program at Healthways Recreation Centre.  

In Literacy, we continued to study narratives and used them to help us further improve our narrative writing. The students worked on aspects of narrative writing including the use of adjectives, ensuring we have a well-developed story structure and practising the art of editing. We then moved on to writing information texts related to our Integrated Unit. In Reading, we furthered our understanding of comprehension, including asking questions before, during and after reading, and summarising. The students continued to build their reading stamina and expanded their vocabulary.  

In Mathematics, Level 2 has further developed our knowledge of place value. We have increased our understanding of multiplication through arrays, doubling and halving, and other strategies. The students explored both two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, including parallel lines. Learning about unit fractions and time was fun.

Level 3

LEVEL 3 TERM 3: 

Level 3 students have had a Term full of new and exciting experiences. The term had its fair share of opportunities to learn and for students to get out of their comfort zone. Let’s look back on what made term 3 such a memorable one.  

In our Reading classes we started reading our new novel ‘Blueback’. Students explored the relationship between Abel Jackson, his mother and the ocean. Tim Winton’s writing shone through our morning sessions as the playful little fish ignited our imaginations! 

We began to write procedural texts in class. Students quickly understood the importance of specific instructions as their ‘Jam Sandwich’ recipe sent teachers rubbing butter on their forearms. We finished off the Term publishing our proudest pieces.  

In Maths our focus was on probability. Students created and identified scenarios ranging from Impossible to Certain. Plenty of fun was had in our probability maths games that put our critical thinking to the test. Our students became so confident in probability that they built their own games based on probability and tested it out on their classmates.   

Students spent the term learning a lot about our first nations clans and cultures this term which included learning about stories through art and language. This was supported with our amazing trip to CERES Environmental park. Students were given the opportunity to act out dreamtime stories, pick some bush tucker and take part in the special tradition of using Ochre to paint drawings and stories on their skin.   

This term of course also was the students first opportunity to attend a school camp. With a bus full of excitement and nerves the level 3’s made their way to camp ADANAC for 3 amazing days of fun. Students squealed down the flying fox over the heads of the canoers below. Teachers with water buckets drenched kids in huts made of sticks while others learnt how to work together through team challenges. At night after a delicious dinner the students had a chance to dance through a trivia night and snuggle in for a cosy movie evening with popcorn of course.   

We hope that all our Level 3 families have a fantastic break and cannot wait to see you all in TERM 4!! 

Level 4

End of Term 3 in Level 4, 2026  

What a busy and rewarding term it has been in Level 4! Our students have continued to grow as learners, challenge themselves and develop new skills across all areas of the curriculum. We have also enjoyed some wonderful experiences together, creating plenty of memories along the way.  

We began the term with our Grade 4 camp to Forest Edge CYC. Camp provided students with opportunities to try new activities and develop resilience. Most importantly, it was a fantastic opportunity for students to build friendships, work as a team and create lasting memories together. We were incredibly proud of the way students supported and encouraged one another throughout the experience. 

This term, we have been developing our comprehension skills by exploring main idea, fact and opinion, and figurative language, with a particular focus on First Nations texts.  Our writing lessons have been closely connected to our experiences this term, particularly our exciting camp to Forest Edge CYC. Students have explored a range of writing styles and purposes, including poetry, letter writing, procedures and "show, don't tell" pieces, which they have put into a camp brochure.  

The main focus of our Integrated Studies unit this term has been First Nations – Connection to Country and Place. For their projects, students have researched and presented their learning about a particular area related to First Nations People, while developing a greater understanding and respect for First Nations histories, cultures, traditions and perspectives. To connect with our learning, we enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Melbourne Museum and the IMAX theatre.  

In Mathematics, we have been building our understanding of fractions and decimals, place value, and time. Students have been developing their ability to represent and compare numbers, make connections between fractions and decimals, understand the value of digits within numbers and solve problems involving time. We have continued to encourage students to explain their mathematical thinking and apply their skills to a variety of problem-solving situations. 

Some Level 4 students were also given the opportunity this term to participate in the Sports Extension program, run by Mr Clarke. Students took part in boxing, tennis and yoga on a Friday afternoon to build their skills and teamwork.  

It is hard to believe that we are already approaching the final term of the year! We have another busy and exciting Term 4 ahead, with plenty of learning, challenges and opportunities to celebrate how far our students have come.

Level 5

Level 5 Term 3 Newsletter 

Term 3 has come to a fantastic close, marking the end of another incredibly busy and successful term for our Level 5 students. They have continued to show immense independence and growth as they navigate the challenges of upper primary school. Throughout the term, our students demonstrated great responsibility and engagement across a variety of community milestones, incursions, and school events. We celebrated NAIDOC Week with an insightful First Nations incursion, learned valuable strategies during a Cyber Safety Project session, and showed our creative flair during the Book Week Parade. Students also engaged deeply with the Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum, exploring help-seeking strategies, gender equality, and positive relationship dynamics. 

Our Level 5 students stayed highly active this term, showcasing wonderful teamwork, sportsmanship, and school pride. Many students participated in a variety of athletic events, including the Nunawading District Athletics, Hoop Time, and both Summer and Winter Interschool Sports Gala Days. Students also represented our school exceptionally well during the SSV AFL Girl’s Gala Day and the SSV Boy’s Netball Gala Day. A major highlight of the term was our Melbourne City Walk excursion, which allowed students to step outside the classroom and explore our local geography firsthand. To wrap up the term, everyone enjoyed the high-energy fun of the Father’s Day stall, Billycart Day, and Footy Colours Day. 

In Literacy, our students engaged in a comprehensive "Authors as Mentors" unit, where they analysed and drew inspiration from the rich texts of Margaret Wild and Colin Thompson. In Writing, students used these mentor texts to elevate their own narrative craft, focusing heavily on perspective, verb tenses, and punctuation for dialogue. Later in the term, the focus shifted to Advertising, where students learned about persuasive text types and modality. This culminated in an exciting Speaking and Listening project where students created, pitched, and presented their own radio advertisements to the class through their Market Mayhem projects. Our regular Word Work and Grammar sessions supported this learning, targeting prefixes and suffixes like em-, -able, ir-, im-, semi-, -ate, se-, com-, -ist, and -ion, alongside advanced structures like independent clauses, cohesive devices, and hyperbole. 

The Mathematics curriculum beautifully blended practical spatial concepts with data and numerical skills. Students began the term exploring the world of navigation through a detailed Mapping unit, which directly tied into their Melbourne City Walk excursion. From there, the focus shifted to strengthening their fractional thinking with a deep dive into Fractions and Decimals. Students then transitioned into Financial Maths, learning about budgeting and monetary calculations. We rounded out the term with Chance, Data, and Graphing, where students collected and analysed information—a skillset that came to life during our interactive "Market Mayhem" learning experiences. 

As we look ahead to Term 4, we are excited to see our Level 5 students return refreshed and ready for the final stretch of the school year. The fourth term always brings fantastic opportunities for students to consolidate their learning, stretch their leadership capabilities, and prepare for their upcoming transition into their final year of primary school. We want to thank all of our wonderful families for your ongoing support, partnership, and community spirit throughout the term. We wish everyone a safe, relaxing, and happy school holiday break! 

Level 6

Grade 6 end Term 3 Newsletter 

It is hard to believe our Level 6 students are approaching their final termof Primary School. After seven years, they have grown into confident, capable and caring young people, ready to celebrate their achievements and take the exciting next step into secondary school. 

Term 4 will be a busy and exciting time as we prepare our students for the transition to secondary school. Alongside their learning and leadership responsibilities, students will reflect on their Primary School journey, celebrate their achievements and prepare for this exciting next chapter. 

Literacy 

Level 6 students explored a range of engaging mentor texts by authors and illustrators Anna Walker, Shaun Tan, David Walliams and Jackie French, using their works to inspire ideas and strengthen their writing. Students then delved into the world of advertising, learning how persuasive devices influence audiences and developed their own understanding of persuasive writing techniques. 

Mathematics 

Level 6 students explored timetabling and mapping in preparation for our City Walk excursion, applying their skills to real-world situations. They also developed their understanding of financial mathematics through Market Mayhem before finishing the term by exploring Cartesian planes and coordinates. 

Integrated Studies 

As part of Integrated Studies this term, Level 6 students worked collaboratively on MarketMayhem, preparing to possibly run a stall at the School Oktoberfest Fair. Working in teams, they sourced product costs, estimated sales, and calculated potential income and profit and loss while developing their teamwork, planning, and decision-making skills. 

Term 3 Highlights 

Level 6 students enjoyed a busy term filled with memorable experiences, including our City Walk excursion, Cyber Safety Project incursion, Cupcake Day and Mini Boss Smoothie Bar incursion. We also celebrated Book Week, represented our school at the Summer Inter-School Sports days, and took part in the ASPIRE incursion, before finishing the term with the excitement of Billy Cart Day and Footy Colours Day. 

Enjoy the holiday break! We look forward to welcoming back our students in Term 4 for their final term of primary school.
