Our school chess team is scheduled to play in the third round of the annual New South Wales Junior Chess League Country Knockout against Pacific Brook Christian School this week. There is healthy competition among the students for the limited places in the chess team. Apart from the enjoyment aspect, playing chess enables our students to develop their critical thinking skills, work together in a team environment and create new friendships with students from other schools. There are social chess matches in the library every Tuesday.

The closing date for the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) has been extended to Friday 19 September, which is Week Nine, Term Three. The PRC enables participants to experience quality literature from a range of authors and genres. Students need to read twenty books, including at least ten books from the prescribed PRC reading lists. Please email Mr Boyce on andrew.boyce@mn.catholic.edu.au if you wish to add titles to your PRC student reading log.

On Tuesday 3 June the library hosted sessions for Year 6 Middle Schools Day. The students watched a PowerPoint about fiction and non-fiction books, and the layout of the library. Then, the students participated in a scavenger hunt with the first group of two students completing the scavenger hunt the fastest (after answering a couple of questions to prove they did not cheat.) The winners received a fruit mentos lolly from Mrs Sarah Matulewicz, with the students enjoying the scavenger hunt. The Middle Schools Day for Year 5 students will be held in Term 3 on Wednesday 3 September.

Finally, NRL Footy tips need to be submitted into the library by 3.15pm on Thursday afternoons or emailed before the first game of the round kicks off. The competition is gaining popularity, with more participants signing up this year. After thirteen rounds, only one-point separates first and second, and there are four people in second position. A leaderboard is available for viewing in the junior fiction area of the library.
