Grade 5/6

Miss Stephan and Mr Ward, supported by Mr Reid & Mrs Morse

Literacy

Last week, we completed our explanatory unit on how to build a skyscraper, it was wonderful to see all hard work and newfound knowledge being used in the writing pieces. This week, we have moved onto our next mentor text ‘Black Cockatoo’ to focus on analysing different characters. Throughout this unit, we will be learning various vocabulary words as well as expanding our knowledge of different types of sentences and the importance of subjects and predicates. By the end of this unit, we will be planning and writing a character analysis paragraph using a Single-Paragraph Outline.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have completed Big Idea 4 ‘Comparison: Numbers, expressions, and measures can be compared by their relative values’. It was fantastic to see all the growth after the students completed their post test as well as the excitement to start the next Big Idea. Big Idea 5 ‘Operation meanings & RELATIONSHIPS: The same number sentence (e.g. 12-4 = 8) can be associated with different concrete or real-world situations, AND different number sentences can be associated with the same concrete or real-world situation.’ The students have been showing amazing independence by completing their tasks at their own pace, as well as supporting and helping other students.

Integrated Studies

Last week, in Integrated Studies, we learnt about the importance of preparing for extreme weather and disasters, we watched short clips about; floods, bushfires and cyclones and were able to use the information we learnt to create a disaster plan to share with the class. In the coming weeks, we will learn about the difference between landscapes and landforms and choose one to create a slideshow on to teach our peers about it.
