REAL WORLD LEARNING IN GRADE 3/4B NUMERACY

We have been on a mission to make numeracy real and relevant in the best possible way!

These last couple of weeks, we have been exploring how maths is not just something you find in textbooks, but something you use every day (yes, every day, no more “when am I ever going to use this?” excuses!).

We have been diving into real world maths by:

Using Book Club and Supermarket Brochures – Who knew math could involve such intense debates over the best deals on chips and lollies or how many books you can afford with $20? Students have been comparing prices, adding totals, and calculating change faster than a checkout scanner!

Planning Travel Adventures – From calculating how long it takes to drive to the zoo, or just to Nan’s house, students have been estimating travel time and understanding the equivalence in minutes and even seconds.

Measuring and Mastering Recipes – Our mini-chefs have been reading recipes, converting millilitres to cups, doubling ingredients and halving them all while figuring out how maths really tastes in the real world. Fractions never looked so delicious!

Measuring Everything (and I mean everything) – From classroom doors to water bottles, the students have been converting millimetres to centimetres to kilometres (okay, maybe not everything got the kilometre treatment… but we tried!). And don’t be surprised if they suddenly start measuring the hallway or their sibling "for maths".

By linking these everyday experiences to numeracy, students are not just learning how to crunch numbers, they are learning how to think and apply their way through mathematical concepts. Real-world maths isn’t just more engaging, it is the secret for deeper understanding and long term retention. It helps the students see the “why” behind the “how,” and suddenly… numbers start to make sense.
