🧠 From ā€œCan’t Doā€ to ā€œCan Doā€ – A Growth Mindset at Home - Andrew Fuller

Psychologist Andrew Fuller reminds us that building a resilient, growth-oriented mindset in children is one of the best predictors of success. As Henry Ford said, ā€œWhether you think you can or think you can’t – you’re right.ā€ Here are some key ways parents can help children shift from a ā€œcan’t doā€ to a ā€œcan doā€ mindset:

šŸ’¬ Use ā€œI noticedā€ feedback

Start comments with ā€œI noticedā€¦ā€ to encourage effort and awareness:

  • ā€œI noticed you’re really focused on your reading.ā€
  • ā€œI noticed you were upset — want to talk about it?ā€It helps children feel seen and gently corrects without criticism.

⭐ Praise effort, not just talent

Focus on the hard work behind success:

  • ā€œI’m proud of how much you practised.ā€
  • ā€œYou didn’t give up — that’s what matters!ā€This teaches kids that effort leads to improvement.

āŒ Mistakes = Learning

Mistakes aren’t failures — they’re stepping stones. Even famous inventors like James Dyson had thousands of failed attempts before success. Let kids know that getting it wrong is part of getting it right.

šŸ” Bounce back from setbacks

Help your child reflect on what went wrong and how to improve:

  • What went well?
  • What didn’t?
  • What would you do differently next time?

This builds emotional resilience and problem-solving skills.

šŸ—£ļø Share your own challenges

Talk about a time when you struggled and kept going. Children learn a lot by hearing that even adults have to persevere.

šŸŽ‰ Celebrate successes with heart

When your child succeeds, connect your praise to effort:

  • ā€œAll that work really paid off — well done!ā€
  • ā€œThat project turned out so well because you stuck with it!ā€

šŸŽˆ Be proud — loudly!

Kids secretly love knowing their parents are proud of them. Celebrate them in private (and sometimes in public!). It matters more than you think.

šŸŒ Try new things together

Help your child break routine by trying something new — a new place, a new activity, a quirky challenge. It keeps life interesting and builds confidence.

Let’s raise kids who believe that effort counts, mistakes help us grow, and there's always another go
