In Knowledge, students spent a week learning about the different main natural resources of the earth. These include water, air and land. We explored the different ways humans and animals use these resources and the impact contamination can have on both us and the environment. Students created a news style report on Seesaw to demonstrate all they had learnt.
During May, students have finished up persuasive writing by working together to write a piece convincing the public to protect earth’s resources. Students used what they had learnt from the knowledge unit ‘Protecting Earth’s Resources’ so they had lots of facts about water, air and land and why it was important to look after them. They did such a great job including persuasive devices such as hyperboles, rule of three, emotive language and rhetorical questions that it was hard to argue with them!
These past few weeks have been extremely busy for numeracy learning in Grade 5. Multiplication and Division have been the primary focus, as we have looked into more complex multiplication problems. We have focused around different strategies for solving multiplication problems, including the bar model, area model and vertical algorithms. By learning different strategies we allow everyone to have a greater understanding of how to solve these challenges. We have begun to look into division, including how to write and solve long division problems. We will begin looking into decimals, fractions and percentages in the coming weeks, before linking everything together. 0
In the other areas of Numeracy, we have looked at posing questions and collecting data to put into line graphs. We will start learning about angles, including using a protractor to read and measure angles. Finally, we have consistently made sure that all areas we have covered far this year are being revisited in Daily Review lessons.
In Auslan we have looked at speaking sentences through signing. We have also learned words for kitchen and other household items as well as different kinds of foods and items we use when playing outdoors.
In SEL, we have looked at how our bodies feel when experiencing different emotions, including both body language and facial expressions. This led to the discussion on coping strategies when feeling negative emotions to try and calm ourselves. Students explored different situations in which they experienced these emotions to help them understand when they might feel those emotions again, such as stress during a new learning topic.
