Term 2 2025

Literacy

Foundation students have progressed to Stage 3 of our Little Learners Love Literacy Program. So far, they have been introduced to the sounds y, r, and e. Our focus has been on building words, segmenting and blending them to read accurately, along with spelling CVC (Consonant- Vowel- Consonant) words.

Heart Words

Students are currently focusing on mastering their Stage 1 and 2 Heart Words as part of our Little Learners Love Literacy program. To support this, we are engaging in a variety of activities.

Stage 1 and 2 Heart Words

We have now introduced the Stage 3 Heart Words, highlighting the tricky parts in each one. Teaching these challenging components helps students identify the words in different contexts.

In Writing, we have been listening to different stories and identifying the different parts of the story; character, problem, feeling, action and the end. We have been drawing pictures for the character and the problem. Now we have started to draw pictures to show each part of the story.

Maths

In Mathematics we have been consolidating our learning with part-part whole. We have also reviewed recognising, naming and counting numbers to 10. In the next week we will be introducing and focusing on adding numbers to 5 and 10. We will be using concrete materials like counters, unifix cubes and tens frames to demonstrate our understanding of adding two numbers together to find the total amount.

Over the past few weeks, students have been developing their skills in data collection and representation. They have been learning how to ask simple yes/no questions—such as “Do you like Vegemite?” and “Do you have brown eyes?”—and have enjoyed moving around the classroom to survey their peers. Once the data was collected, students organised the responses into tables, helping them begin to interpret and compare results. Students have also been consolidating their understanding of 2D shapes, focusing on identifying triangles, circles, squares, and rectangles. They have engaged in a range of activities to explore the features of these shapes and to recognise them in their environment. In addition, we have been working on comparing and measuring length. Using a variety of everyday objects and measurement tools, students have practised using language such as “longer,” “shorter,” and “the same length” to describe their observations. These hands-on experiences are supporting the development of key mathematical concepts in both geometry and measurement.

Social & Emotional Learning

We have continued to work through Social and Emotional Learning through the Resilience Project. This week we had a particular emphasis on Kindness. Students have explored the concept of kindness and different ways that we can spread kindness through different acts. They also identified how partaking in different acts of kindness can make others feel. Our goal is for this understanding to extend beyond the school environment, allowing each child to actively be kind to those around them.
