Principal Report

Good afternoon NLPS families,

Winter is well and truly here and it has brought some illness and general tiredness with it! However, we are all doing our best to show our school value of resilience and work through it with a positive attitude and a smile on our face. Our students are well and truly ensconced in their learning and semester one assessments are almost all done. The long weekend will help to break up the long term and hopefully provide a fun family moment or two for us all.

(Student) Attitudes to School Survey 2025

Mat and I have been in classrooms this past week or so conducting this year’s AtoSS. The Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS) is an annual survey conducted by the Victorian Department of Education. It's designed to gather feedback from students about their experiences at school — including how safe, supported, and connected they feel. It's an important tool for schools to understand how students are feeling. The survey helps identify strengths and areas for improvement in our school culture, teaching practices, and student wellbeing programs. Students in Years 4 to 12 are invited to take part. Participation is voluntary and anonymous — their personal information isn’t linked to their answers/school results. The 70 or so questions cover areas such as; sense of belonging at school, safety and respect, teacher-student relationships, learning confidence and motivation, and emotional and social wellbeing.

Ultimately, we use the results to:

  • Improve our student wellbeing programs
  • Tailor teaching strategies
  • Strengthen the school culture
  • Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported

Based on trends in our school’s AtoSS data from 2022-2024, we have worked hard this year to ensure students understand the multiple opportunities they have for voice and agency, and to increase their feelings of connectedness to staff and peers, as well as try to reduce some significant differences we have found between the genders in some responses. As this is an online survey, results should be out later next month and we are looking forward to seeing improvements which we can share with the school community at a later date.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews will be conducted for all grade levels on Monday 30th June from 2:00 - 7.00pm. The interviews will be conducted via WebEx or face-to-face. To further the school’s work on student agency, the Year 5/6 classes will be conducting ‘3 way’ (parent-teacher-student) conferences where the student will lead the session. Further details on how to book an interview time for your child/ren will be posted to all parents via Compass in the very near future. Semester 1 Reports will be made available to families the week prior.

2024 Annual Report

It is a legislative requirement that all Victorian government schools prepare an Annual Report by 30th April each year, and that this includes school specific information on student outcomes, attendance, and financial activities. The Annual Report must be endorsed at a meeting of the school council and attested to by the principal and school council president. This was done in late Term 1, 2024.

The 2024 NLPS Annual Report has now passed departmental quality assurance and will be presented to the school community prior to our next school council meeting on Monday, June 23rd from 6:15pm (online). It will also be made available online to read prior - more information will be given in our next newsletter.

Upcoming Long Weekend

Parents are reminded that there is no school or childcare on Monday 9th June. I hope all families have the opportunity of having a small break and some relaxing time together over the upcoming long weekend.

2026 Foundation Enrolments

We would like to remind families that enrolment is required to be done by July 25th, so we can plan for 2026 with confidence - of course, enrolment can also be done earlier. If you have a sibling of a student that attends here already, please do not forget to get this done by the due date.

Rug up and enjoy the long weekend everyone!
