Felting Magic in Year 5 and 6 Art
Over the past few weeks, our Year 5 and 6 students have been immersed in a truly unique artistic experience, learning the intricate and rewarding process of felting. With the generous support of talented volunteers Emily Fairmaid and her mum, Jan, the children explored both 2D and 3D felting techniques in a series of hands-on sessions that sparked creativity and curiosity.
In their first project, students created flat felt samples by working through the stages of felting: teasing the fibres, layering colourful wool roving, applying warm soapy water, rolling the felt, and fulling it into a finished piece. They learnt how to press, roll and even “shock” the felt to help the fibres interlock, creating stunning felted designs full of texture and colour.
The second project took things to the next level with a 3D felting challenge, sculpting a felt vessel. Using a ball as the base, students carefully wrapped, layered, and rolled their wool to form a felted shell. After deflating and removing the ball, they shaped and decorated their vessels with leftover felt to personalise their creations.
Throughout the process, students demonstrated impressive patience, care, and attention to detail. The results were nothing short of beautiful, vibrant, tactile works of art that the children can be truly proud of.
A heartfelt thank you to Emily and Jan for so generously sharing their time, skills, and love of felting with our students. Your support made this creative journey not only possible but deeply memorable. The children were able to explore texture, shape and colour while building skills and perfecting techniques along the way. Adaptable for all ages and abilities, felting is perfect for imaginative, sensory-rich classroom experiences.
