UBUNTU

We were so fortunate to host the African Choir, Ubuntu last week.

A  big thank you to Lisa Peake who co-ordinated the visit and spent many hours setting up and organising the concert at Sacred Heart.

We must also thank our whole Holy Cross community for welcoming our visitors and those families that hosted members of the choir in their homes.

It is a unique experience for not only the children but everyone privileged enough to meet them and see them perform.

Throughout the week, as well as listening to music and participating in drumming workshops, the children had a cross-cultural session with members of Ubuntu, having the opportunity to ask questions, share stories and games,  and explore what they had learned about Africa and Solidarity through art. This was a unique opportunity for our children to interact with Ubuntu, to learn something about Africa and to experience a new culture.

Our Year 5 & 6 classes wanted to make links to their geography unit and spoke with the choir members about their home country. You can find the slides they shared below. The Preps linked their lesson with Ubuntu to their RE unit on Solidarity. They talked about what Ubuntu means, I am because you are, you are because we are. They talked about how everyone needs each other to support, encourage and love each other. Then they taught the choir members one of the songs they had learnt this year, Love One Another, before completing an art activity together. The Year 3 & 4 children had fun completing a Kahoot with their classroom visitors about Africa! Lots of learning and lots of fun!
