October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, an important time to acknowledge and understand this common learning difference. Our school recognises this month as an opportunity to raise awareness about dyslexia and share resources to support our Valkstone School community.
Dyslexia affects approximately 10% of Australians, making it one of the most prevalent learning differences. Despite its commonality, many misconceptions persist. This month serves as a reminder to educate ourselves about dyslexia and promote understanding and inclusion.
While Valkstone PS isn't organising specific events, we encourage our community to learn more about dyslexia. Parents seeking support for children with dyslexia can access several excellent organisations in Melbourne and across Australia:
1. Australian Dyslexia Association (ADA): A national organization providing information, support, and advocacy for individuals with dyslexia and their families.
Website: www.dyslexiaassociation.org.au
2. Code Read Dyslexia Network: Offers resources, workshops, and support groups across Australia.
Website: www.codereadnetwork.org
3. Learning Difficulties Australia (LDA): Based in Melbourne, LDA provides professional development for educators and resources for parents.
Website: www.ldaustralia.org
4. SPELD Victoria: Offers assessments, tutoring, and workshops for individuals with specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia.
Website: www.speldvic.org.au
5. Dyslexia Victoria Support: A Melbourne-based group offering support and information for families affected by dyslexia.
Website: www.dyslexiavictoriasupport.com
These organisations offer valuable resources, including information about dyslexia, strategies for support, and opportunities to connect with other families. We encourage our school community to explore these resources and continue learning about dyslexia beyond this awareness month.
By recognising Dyslexia Awareness Month, we aim to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for all our students. Understanding and accommodating different learning needs benefits our entire school community.
