What's Happening In Primary

News and Information from Primary

Take a Walk Through Kinder, Prep and Year 1/2

Over the past two weeks, we have welcomed our 2025 Kinder families to DCS through the first two Orientation Sessions. During these sessions, we celebrated the DCS community and the learning opportunities provided to each student.

This week in the newsletter we are focusing on the Kinder, Prep and Year 1/2 Learning Communities and what has been happening in these spaces. As you walk through each area, you will see firsthand some of the projects students have been working on.

We encourage you to visit the spaces outside the Kinder to Year 2 classrooms, either in the morning before school or at the end of the day. You will see still life drawings of flowers, Book Week costumes, places students have explored, butterflies, goals, habitats and much more.

Musica Viva Performance

Students will be treated to a wonderful performance by Musica Viva, called Timmy and the Breakfast Band, on Wednesday 18th September in the Jiloa Centre.

Musica Viva Australia are proud to be one of Australia’s largest and most trusted providers of music education in the country. They are passionate about providing opportunities for teachers and students to engage in creative learning through their Musica Viva Australia In Schools program, which delivers on their vision to enhance children’s appreciation of music and boost their creativity.

Timmy and the Breakfast Band is about Timmy, a perfectly normal schoolboy, but inside he hears music in his head – all the time! In this energetic pairing of circus and music, Musica Viva's performers bring Timmy to life and show students how music can influence their mood and actions.

Parents and younger siblings are warmly invited to join us at either session of this very special performance.

Students in Kinder-Year 2 will be watching the show at 11.30am and students in Years 3-6 will be watching at 1.45pm.  Please arrive five minutes early to be seated ready for the show.

This Is Secondary Taster Day

On Thursday 19th September, our Year 6 students will be experiencing a 'This Is Secondary' Taster Day!

'This Is Secondary' Taster Day has been designed to give our Year 6 students a sneak peek into the Secondary community and to experience a day in the life of Secondary at DCS!

Students will have the opportunity to experience some of the options classes that are available in Year 7, including:

  • Science
  • Outdoor Ed
  • Materials and Design
  • Interaction with Community

On the day, students will be provided with a light lunch, but should also bring along their regular morning tea, packed lunch and drink bottle.  Our day will commence at the usual starting time of 8:30am and conclude at 3:10pm.  Just as our current Secondary students do, your child will have the choice on which uniform they wish to wear on the day: either the full winter uniform or the sports uniform.

If you would like further information, please contact our Head of Secondary, Mrs Alison Moore via email at: moorea@dcs.tas.edu.au

We are looking forward to a fantastic day!

Kidpreneur

DCS Community Hot Lunch Day

On Thursday 26th September, the last day of term, students will have the opportunity to order a delicious hot pie, pastie or sausage roll for lunch from All Things Nice Bakery or a serve of hot chips from Charcoal Chicken!

Please note for students with dietary requirements: only the large sausage roll and hot chips are available in a gluten free option.

Order forms have been sent home with all students today, and copies are available from the school office.

All orders and payments (cash only please) must be returned by Friday 20th September (no late orders can be accepted).

Casual Clothes Day: Footy Colours Day

On Thursday 26th September, our students will be having an end-of-term casual clothes day. Students in both Primary and Secondary are invited to wear footy colours (all codes), with money raised going to the Children's Cancer Foundation. Please ensure that casual clothes are appropriate with fully enclosed shoes to provide protection. Cost is a gold coin donation.

School Uniform Change Over

It is getting closer to the end of term, and the change-over to summer uniform in Term 4 for our primary students.   This also includes our ‘Yes Hat, Yes Play’ policy requiring all primary students to wear either our school legionnaire or wide-brimmed hat whilst outside.

Due to our varied weather here in Tasmania, students have the option of wearing either the winter or summer uniform for the first two weeks of Term 4.  All students will be required to be in full summer uniform by Monday 28th October.

Uniform sales are available throughout the term and you are welcome to access the DCS Community Cupboard for uniform needs for your family or to support other DCS families.

To look at donated uniforms, or to donate uniforms that are no longer required, please come and see the friendly staff at the school office. There is also a DCS Community Uniform Facebook Group for buying, selling or giving away uniforms. Please contact Jasmin at: thompsonj@dcs.tas.edu.au if you wish to get connected on this platform.
