As I reflect on the recent storms that have swept through our beautiful North West Coast, I am reminded of the fierce winds and relentless rain that battered our homes, uprooted massive trees, and left many of us without power for days. These storms, with their power and devastation, serve as a vivid reminder of the unpredictability of life and how, at times, we are shaken by forces beyond our control.
We saw the damage: trees toppled, branches scattered across roads, and homes left in darkness. The storm caused disruptions to our everyday lives, forcing us to navigate unforeseen challenges. Yet, amidst this destruction, something truly remarkable happened—our community came together in strength and unity. In the midst of nature’s turmoil, we witnessed the best of humanity.
People reached out to one another, lending generators, sharing batteries, opening their homes, and preparing meals. Halls were opened as places of refuge, cafes gifting coffee, and hearts were opened even wider. This is the essence of community—the love and care for one another, even when we ourselves are navigating the storm.
The Bible often uses storms as metaphors for the trials and difficulties we face in life. A few weeks ago I wrote about such a story in the Bible. In Mark 4:37-39, we read about the disciples being caught in a storm while on a boat with Jesus. As the waves crashed and the winds howled, the disciples feared for their lives. But Jesus, with all His authority, calmed the storm and asked them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). This passage reminds us that even in the most tumultuous of circumstances, Jesus is with us, bringing peace and strength when we turn to Him.
Likewise, when life’s storms hit, they can leave us feeling overwhelmed, just like the winds that whipped through our coast. Yet, as we have seen, these storms also bring us together. They allow us to put into practice what we are called to do as followers of Christ — to love and serve one another. In these moments, we are reminded of Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfil the law of Christ.”
Christian leader Max Lucado once said, “When we face the stormy seasons of life, let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus.” This is precisely what I saw in our community during the recent storms. Neighbours supporting neighbours, families opening their doors to those in need, and a collective spirit of resilience and generosity. What a beautiful expression of God’s love at work among us!
The devastation caused by storms, both literal and figurative, is real. Yet, they also provide an opportunity for us to rise together, unified in our response. May we celebrate the kindness and generosity that have been displayed, knowing that every small act of service reflects the heart of Jesus.
So today, I encourage each of us to pause and reflect: Who can we serve and support? Who might be struggling in silence, needing a word of encouragement or a helping hand? Let us be the hands and feet of Jesus to those around us. As we continue to step through life’s storms—whether it be through wind, rain, or life’s difficulties—may we be reminded that God is with us, empowering us to lift one another up in love and unity.
Shalom, shalom.
