Sustainability News

Last term I spoke to the Grade 4 and 5 classes about being a part of a Lunchtime Sustainability group. I asked the students to write me an application letter articulating the reasons why they would like to be a part of our Wales Street Sustainability Club. I was so impressed by the sentiments, enthusiasm and quality of the applications as well as the fabulous ideas the students would like to action. Congratulations to those ecological superstars Oliver H-E, Emily C, Sassy E, Chloe B, Matilda C, Neev R, Jack R, Penny F, Ollie K, Finn N, Lola P, Lindsey E, Liv Mc, Ruby R and Nora M.

Nude food
Our Nude food class winners for Term 3 were 2A (pictured), Foundation C and 5B. Well done to those classes for having the highest amount of Nude food lunches.
This Term the sustainability club will give a surprise visit to each class and tally the results for the highest winner over the term, as well as the fortnightly winners to be announced at Assembly.
Good luck everyone!
The Great Aussie bird count
This week many grades across the school participated in The Aussie bird Count which asked students to identify the birds in our school grounds and collate the data. The Aussie Bird Count was a wonderful way for students and teachers to learn what bird species are in our local environment and to spend some time noticing our feathered friends. Wales Street’s participation can count towards our accreditation in ResourceSmart schools for the Biodiversity module. A shout out to Steve and 4A who used their data to practise their maths skills by finding the average of the different species of birds they found over the week.
Tree Project
Wales Street has signed up to be a part of the 2025 Spring growing season for ‘Tree project’- a volunteer run initiative which works with large landholders to regenerate native tree, grass and shrub species on previously cleared land. Classes will endeavour to grow their own native trees from seed and use this experience as a springboard to support concepts in our Inquiry and Science curriculum.
Please see the flyer below if you would also like to become a grower for next year in your own backyard and support this very worthwhile initiative.
