A Special Report: R U OK? Day
Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm - are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics, and societal expectations, are contributing to these issues. It's therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health, and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.
R U OK? Day is an initiative that focuses on preventing suicide by encouraging meaningful personal connections and helping informal support networks to help recognise the signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, "Are you OK?"
Engaging in R U OK? Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it's a commitment to our students' overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued, and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK? Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.
On Thursday 12th of September, our Wellbeing Committee led by Charli Lovell and Remi Alderuccio organised some wonderful activities for R U OK? Day 2024. This special day is dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and encouraging everyone to check in with themselves and others. Free icy poles were handed out to all students over lunchtime as a simple gesture to bring a smile to everyone’s faces and remind us all to take a moment to enjoy the little things in life. After the icy poles, students were able to take part in mindful colouring sessions in the LRC. This activity was designed to help everyone relax, unwind, and engage in a creative way that promotes mental calm and focus.
One of the highlights of the day was the collaborative mural project. Students came together to create a beautiful mural, representing our collective commitment to mental health and wellbeing. We hope these activities helped to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and provided everyone with a sense of community and support.
Remember, checking in with yourself and others is a crucial part of maintaining mental wellness, and we encourage everyone to keep the conversation going beyond R U OK? Day. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this day successful. Let’s continue to look out for one another and make wellbeing a priority every day!
