Sports Award Night

On Wednesday, 18 September, we proudly recognised our senior students for their outstanding achievements, hard work, and dedication through the presentation of awards.

We were honored to have Marijana Rajcic, an old scholar and accomplished athlete, as our guest speaker. Marijana has had an impressive sporting career, playing professional soccer for Adelaide United and Australian rules football for the Adelaide Football Club in the AFLW, where she won premierships in 2019 and 2022.

It is great to see so many students participating in sport as students who engage in sports tend to achieve higher success, exhibit stronger leadership qualities, manage stress more effectively, and enjoy greater overall well-being. Through sports, we develop essential skills like discipline, perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and the ability to set and achieve goals. These qualities equip us to excel not only in athletics but also in academics, careers, and personal life.

Knockout Sport

Congratulations to the Knockout Soccer team who participated in the School Sport SA Division 1 soccer finals on Tuesday 24 September. Finishing in thew top 4 out of 37 schools is an outstanding achievement! We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.

Rowing Brunch

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Loreto Rowing Season Opening Brunch last Sunday. The event marked the beginning of an exciting season ahead, as our rowers prepare to give their all on the water. 2025 will be a special year for Loreto College Marryatville as this will be the first time we host Head of the River. We look forward to a successful and thrilling season ahead!

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Year 8 student, Tilda Pelham, who has been selected in the U14 State Hockey Team to play in Perth from September 29th - October 5th. We wish her all the best for this competition.

Well done to our talented soccer players on their cup wins!  Several of our Loreto girls played in cup finals over the weekend with two teams finishing in first place.

Netball finals

Well done to all three of our teams on their finals performances!

The Year 6 White team had finished in 4th place so were faced with an elimination final. Scores were level at half time and it’s fair to say that there were a few nerves creeping in on the sidelines. We needn’t have worried! The team clicked into gear after the half-time oranges and they put together their best half of the season. We ran out winners by 7 and moved through to the preliminary final. Fronting up immediately after the Canberra trip proved a challenge! The girls worked hard but just went down. Well done to all the players and the coaches Lucy, Olivia and Rose on a brilliant season!

The Year 5 Blue team had a strong 35-18 win in the semi final to qualify for the grand final. The decider ebbed and flowed throughout. We fell behind in the second quarter but an amazing run of 8 goals in a row saw us pinch the lead. East Adelaide ended up winners 26-22 in a fantastic game of netball. Well done on a great season to Megan and the girls! They showed tremendous character to fight back in the decider and whilst a little disappointed to lose, showed excellent sportsmanship and maturity after the game – proud of their season and congratulating the winners.

The Year 6 Gold team won the Sub Junior 2 premiership after two dominant finals performances. The semi final saw a strong win over Burnside. Our shooters Milla and Emily were ruthlessly efficient in the goal circle while at the other end of the court Mia and Elsa-Marie picked up a number of intercepts. Midcourters Juliet, Matilda and Domenica worked tirelessly all game in a complete team display. Special mention to Matilda who limped through the game with a sore ankle. Illness had left us with the bare minimum of 7 players so Matilda had no hesitation in putting her hand up to help the team. She played a typically spirited game, demonstrating the power of mind over matter (several metres of ankle tape also helped).

The Grand final started in tense fashion, but we took control in the second quarter and stormed to a 30-6 win. To say it was a complete display would be an understatement! Thank you, Daniel for coaching and well done to the players on an excellent season!

Thank you to all the parents, families, classmates and teaching staff who attended the matches and made it such a fun, supportive environment. Bring on the summer season!

State Netball - Alyssa Reed

Well done to Alyssa who won the national 12 years and under championship with South Australia last week in Melbourne.

Going into the final day of competition, SA sat in 2nd place and played 1st placed Queensland in the morning game. A win would mean that the two teams finished tied as champions! The game see-sawed throughout with SA holding a slender advantage at half time. Alyssa played a superb 2nd half at wing attack and SA hung on to win a thriller by 2 goals. Amazingly Alyssa found out after x-rays on her return to Adelaide that she had been playing with two fractured fingers!

Mia Freason-Lea - Football

Congratulations to Mia who finished runner up in the SANFL’s Under 14 Girls competition this winter. Mia received her medal at Adelaide Oval at the Norwood vs Glenelg grand final.

Her fellow premiership winning Goodwood teammate Sophie Adamson won her club’s Best Team Player Award.

Talents beyond the sports field

Colette Cheng has performed well in netball, cross country, athletics, touch football and soccer this year but demonstrated her all-round abilities at the Royal Show, winning and award for this brilliant painting!

City to Bay

Well done to Olivia Saber and Evie Harrison who ran in the City to Bay 6km competition last weekend. The girls did an amazing job running the 6km distance for the first time. Both of their results were pretty phenomenal for first timers!

  • Olivia - Second girl in the 8 year old category in a time of 31 minutes, 53 seconds
  • Evie - Fourth girl in the 9 year old category in a time of 36 minutes, 38 seconds

Final Games

Well done to our volleyball and hockey teams who finished their seasons on Friday! The girls have had great terms and I hope that you had fun.

Newton Jags

Well done to Minny Winter’s Sub Junior 7 team who won their way through to the grand final. They went down in the decider but Minny did get to meet Lauren Frew from the Adelaide Thunderbirds!

SA Short Course Swimming Championships

Well done to Lucy Mackay who won a swag of medals at the recent short course meet:

  • Gold 50m butterfly
  • Gold 100m butterfly
  • Silver 50m freestyle
  • Silver 100m freestyle
  • Bronze 4 x 50m freestyle relay
  • Bronze 4 x 50m medley relay
  • Bronze mixed 8 x 50m freestyle relay

Soccer – Holland Sisters

Well done to Charlotte and Alexandra Holland who starred in the Football SA Junior Cup at FM Stadium recently. The girls play for Adelaide Uni. Charlotte’s team finished runners up while Alex’s was premiers.

Performing Arts

Music Night

On 17 September, Loreto hosted its much-anticipated Annual Music Night, and what a spectacular event it was! The evening was filled with incredible talent, featuring performances from students from Year 6 through to Year 12. Our talented musicians delivered everything from classical to modern repertoire, showcasing not only their technical skills but also their passion for music.

A special mention goes to our SACE Stage 2 Music – Solo Performance students, Bella Killen, Holly Westbrook, and Ruby Washbourne. Bella and Ruby, both in Year 11, and Holly, a Year 10 student, mesmerised the audience with their performances. Their dedication and hard work throughout the year were evident in their flawless renditions, leaving the crowd in awe. There were also several students studying SACE Stage 2 Music – Ensemble Performance who delivered outstanding performances as part of various ensembles.

The evening provided an opportunity for the Performing Arts community to come together and celebrate the students' musical achievements. From the youngest performers who bravely took the stage to the senior students who have honed their craft over the years, it was a true reflection of the nurturing and supportive environment fostered here at Loreto.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the staff, parents, and students who contributed to making the night such a success. Your efforts made this a memorable evening for everyone involved.

2024 has undoubtedly marked a new era for Loreto within the Performing Arts Department. Performing Arts teachers Ms Casmira Lorien and Ms Georgia Brass have collaborated to usher in a new structure to the Drama and Musical Theatre curriculum with many new initiatives that drive a deeper and more impactful exploration of the Performing Arts.

Drama

In Year 10 Drama, the Semester 2 course has been following a similar structure to that of SACE Stage 1 and 2 Drama, to prepare students for potential future studies. The students have formed a theatre company named Sisterhood Stageworks with a mission to create theatre for teenage girls. They have allocated themselves onstage and offstage roles as part of this company and have devised a 1-hour stage play inspired by works they have viewed on stage and on screen through the process of play-building. This has culminated to an 'In-development Workshop’ performed to an audience during Week 6. A stripped back performance of the script was presented to this trusted audience for feedback on the content, and this has enabled the students to refine over the remainder of this term before performing it to wider public audiences in Term 4.

In Year 9 Drama, the cohort have been studying the topic of Filmmaking, learning a myriad of knowledge and skills through practical and theory activities for both in front of and behind the camera, including conventions of acting for film (and the difference between this and acting for stage), film techniques, film equipment and film crew roles. Students were then asked to take their developed knowledge and skills and develop concepts for short films, and in turn, trailers for these. These trailers were presented at the inaugural Loreto College-Con, where trailers for upcoming short films produced by Loreto students are presented for public viewing. Again, audiences were invited to provide feedback to be considered and applied by the students in developing their final short films over the remainder of the semester, with a public presentation to occur in Term 4.

Based on the excellent work presented by both cohorts, we look forward to the final products of Year 9 and 10 Drama next term. Announcements of the formal presentation dates will be shared soon.
