From the Principal

End of Term

As I write my newsletter piece, during this last week of Term 3, the College is in the final preparations for Mission Day, a much-loved and cherished annual event.  The students have, with a great deal of excitement, prepared items for sale.  There have been many discussions and lots of planning regarding ‘Summertime Sincerity’ costumes for the day and of course the much-anticipated talent show.  The weather forecast looks perfect, and it promises to be a successful day.  Above all, this day is about honouring and financially supporting the important work of Mary Ward International.  A chance for our community to actively live the Loreto value of Justice.

This week also included our Leadership Handover Assembly, an opportunity to gather and celebrate the achievements of our outgoing student leaders from the Class of 2024 and to warmly welcome our new leaders from the Class of 2025. This transition marks an important moment in our college community - a time to reflect, to appreciate, and to look forward with hope and enthusiasm.

Over the past year, the 2024 student leaders have exemplified the Loreto values of Felicity, Freedom, Justice, Sincerity, and Verity. Their leadership has not only inspired their peers but has also created a positive ripple throughout our school and community.

Felicity – the student leaders have fostered joy, making our school a place where students feel valued and connected. Their spirit has made a difference whether it was by their warm, friendly greetings each morning on Talbot Grove entrances or whether it was through organising events, such as dance-offs or bracelet making or simply being there for fellow students.

Freedom – the leaders have encouraged all to express themselves and to pursue their passions. By promoting an environment where everyone can share their ideas and be heard, the student leaders have empowered their peers to stand tall and make their voices count.

Justice— standing up for what is right, advocating for inclusivity and fairness, opposing issues like gender-based violence and poor environmental practices, our leaders have worked to ensure that every student feels welcomed and supported, continuing to build on the foundation of their predecessors, ensuring it will last for years to come.

Sincerity - Honesty and integrity are the building blocks of trust within our College community. Our leaders have approached their responsibilities with a commitment that is truly commendable.

Verity – the student leaders have embraced truth in their actions and decisions, reminding us of the importance of being authentic and genuine. They have led by example and dedicated themselves to this value.

Mary Ward, our founder, approached leadership not as the central figure, she did not dominate, she appeared as an equal, a co-worker, a collaborator.

The open circle negates the traditional hierarchical approach to leadership.  It models dialogue, shared power, mutuality and friendship.  It promoted and deepened trust and belief in capacity.  Indeed, as relevant today as it was more than 400 years ago.

Our 2024 leaders have aimed to lead like Mary Ward. They have embraced their responsibility with grace and determination.  On behalf of the College community, I thank them for their hard work, passion, and the legacy they leave behind.

As we turn our attention to the future and the promise that the Class of 2025 holds, I extend a warm welcome to the next cohort of leaders. They are stepping into a role that carries great responsibility, but it also offers incredible opportunities for growth, creativity, and service.  A role that I know they will undertake with grace and humility, embodying the same Loreto values that have guided their predecessors.

And finally...

As the Term concludes, I wish all students and their families an enjoyable break. I acknowledge that it will not be a time of complete rest for our Year 12 students who are entering into the final stage of their SACE.

Best wishes and I look forward to welcoming you all back for the final term of 2024.
