Early Childhood News

(Pre-Kindy to Year 2)

As many families are already aware, the WA Government is giving away four free tickets to Perth Zoo Free for each WA resident. Visiting the zoo can be a great school holiday activity and a great way to motivate children to keep their school skills current whilst on school holidays!

Navigating around the zoo can be tricky, but also a great opportunity for children to practise using the lost art of reading a map! Have the kids direct you to the Lions or the Penguins. They may need prompting to hold the map in the correct way, or the importance of looking out for landmarks. Navigating the Zoo is a safe way for children to practise their map reading skills away from traffic. Reading Timetables is another mathematical skill that can be refreshed at the zoo, after all nobody wants to miss out on the Otter feeding!

The zoo provides lots of reading opportunities for students to practise their reading skills and prevent a holiday slump! Reading about each animal, its habitat and diet can introduce your child to new and interesting words and enhance their vocabulary too! For younger children, linking the events of your day to popular children’s books like Dear Zoo and Who’s Who in the Zoo can help their comprehension skills develop.
