St George's Day began with a focus on Service. Each class pressed pause on their usual Period 1 lesson to think about service and ask this critical question: “What is the value of service to others?’’
Service is a call to walk in the shoes of others. When done altruistically each party, in the act of service, will benefit. The catch is that our motivation for service should not be driven by a notion of 'making things better', but rather a desire to listen to the needs of others and act accordingly.
The service-learning lesson ended with an affirmation activity. After all, we are nothing if our service is not imbued with a desire to affirm others in their personhood and in their passion for service. Reflecting on the integrity and goodness of each other, every student in the class was invited to write words of affirmation on a Post It Note and hand them to the recipient. For the third year in a row this activity elicited shrieks of joy and moments of humble thanks.
Our Term Two Anglicare donation drive is for Yes! Housing. The Yes! Housing program supports young homeless people as they venture into independent living. It helps make a fresh start with the basics (such as towels or cutlery) and learning to manage their own living arrangements. Every family at St George's is invited to donate one item that will make this transition smooth.
The following list will help St George's families donate if they wish. The Yes! Housing donation drive will be finalised by Term 2, Week 8.
