Literacy - Writing Goals

Over the last three weeks our wonderful Prep-2 Teaching Team have been learning about the benefits of feedback and implementing goal setting into writing lessons. Teachers spent Professional Learning time analysing student writing samples and determining the student's point of need. The next step was to establish writing routines and introduce goal setting language through the use of “I can” statements. I was then able to work alongside teachers to help implement writing routines and goal setting tools, including checklists. Moving along the process, teachers and students then worked together to discuss and set writing goals. Students are working on these goals and we will be reviewing writing samples as a team in the coming weeks to discuss student growth in writing.

Setting goals is an empowering experience for students of all ages. It helps them to take ownership over their learning and focus on areas that they need/want to improve. The entire process of goal setting is extremely motivating for students as it gives them a clear and specific task to work towards and meet.

Some of the goals our Prep-2 students are currently working towards are:

-I can write my name

-I can record the first sound I hear in a word

-I can use  full stops

-I can read my writing to check it makes sense

-I can use finger spaces

- I can add meaningful detail to my writing

Later this term, the 3-6 teachers and students will embark on their feedback journey.

Digital Technology at Galilee

This term, our staff and students have been engaging in Digital Technology Peer Teaching lessons led by our Digital Technology leaders as part of our increasing efforts to expand Digital Literacy among our students at Galilee.

We are piloting this initiative across all classes this Term, to explore all aspects of the Digital Technology curriculum.

Already, we have been fortunate enough to work with 1G, 2K and Prep K on Creating Digital Solutions using Telestory and Scratch Jr.

Our students have embraced and thrown themselves into problem solving and collaborating using technology.

We are extremely proud and excited to see the final results of these digital creations and look forward to working with all of our students this term!

DENDY CROSS COUNTRY

46 students headed out to Bald Hill Park on Wednesday to participate in the Dendy Cross Country.

A beautiful, sunny day in Clardina, we were keen to participate, representing ourselves and school proudly.

Competing against 9 other schools, we had a fantastic result finishing 5th in both the overall points and the % points shields. A tremendous effort!

We also had some wonderful individual efforts from the students below who will go on and represent our school at the Beachside Cross Country later this month.

Information for all Classroom Helpers and Parent Volunteers.

(including classroom helpers, volunteers at events, volunteers at sports days, incursions and excursion)

We are excited to welcome Classroom Helpers into our classrooms in early Term 2 to assist with student learning from Prep to Year 6.

This year all parents/guardians who would like to volunteer in the school will be required to complete the Classroom Helpers and Volunteers at Galilee Portal. At the end of the portal, volunteers will be required to complete a Google Form to acknowledge their completion of the portal.

Volunteers include classroom classroom helpers, volunteers at events, volunteers at Sports Days, incursions and excursions.

Classroom Helpers

To volunteer at Galilee as a classroom helper, you will need to complete Classroom Helpers and Volunteers at Galilee Portal, linked below, hold a current Working With Children Check that the office has a copy of and that you keep on you at all times whilst volunteering, and be available to help in the classroom at a set time (once a week, once a fortnight). This will help teachers to develop a roster and know who is helping on particular days.

If you are unable to commit to a regular time slot and want to occasionally help in the classroom, let your child’s teacher know and you can find a time that will work best for the classroom teacher and students.

Early in Term 2, teachers will send out a timetable with the days and times that they require support. You will be able to nominate a time that works best for you. You will then be rostered weekly or fortnightly.

Volunteers

To volunteer at Galilee in any other capacity, you will need to complete Classroom Helpers and Volunteers at Galilee Portal, linked below and hold a current Working With Children Check that the office has a copy of and that you keep on you at all times whilst volunteering.

Staff will reach out to the community when they require volunteers, for example for sporting events, incursions, excursions, events.

We continue to value all the support and assistance from our parents and thank you in anticipation.
