From the Classroom -  D3 (Rick)

ANZAC DAY

On the 25th of April it was ANZAC Day. In the lead up to this important day, the Foundation students have been learning about its significance through clips, power points and picture stories.

The students of D3 (and D4 and D5) explored their crafting skills and created a poppy using red paper, green icy pole sticks and a black circle sticker. Following this fun language experience, the students discussed a way to form a sentence about their poppy. We counted how many words would be in our sentence and then broke the sentence down to focus on each word. We used our alphabet charts and word wall to assist in writing our sentence about the poppy. As always, we discussed the importance of putting spaces between each word and a full stop at the end of the sentence. The students then practiced reading back their sentence, being sure to point to each word as they read.

Our poppies and our writing have been put on display in our classroom.

After listening to the story ANZAC Ted, D3 completed a teacher led directed drawing to draw their own teddy bear who has been affected by war. We took our time to ensure we remembered all of the important details, coloured inside the lines as best as we could and outlined our finished picture with textas.

We supported our picture by writing a sentence to match. We discussed how many words would be in our sentence and used our alphabet charts and the word wall to assist us. Our ANZAC Ted pictured and writing are on display in our classroom, above our poppy display.

D3 students (along with the rest of the school) were amazing attendees to the ANZAC Day Service held on Wednesday the 24th. The respect that was shown by them was very moving. We had spent the week prior engaging the students with the importance this day holds in Australia and their behaviour and response on the day reflected their understanding of its significance. A very proud moment!
