Foundation

Tennis coaches Peter and Charlotte were back this week to teach our Foundation students a range of different hand eye, movement and tennis based skills. The students thought the obstacle course was 'very impressive' and having to balance on the line, was their favourite part. They also enjoyed having to throw and catch a small tennis ball.

Year 1

Last Friday with Ann, we made Anzac Biscuits! We learnt about the significance of Anzac Day and the origin of the biscuits. As our current focus for Writing is Procedural Texts, we then wrote the recipe together:

How to make Anzac Biscuits

Sugar

Golden Syrup

Water

Bicarb Soda

Steps

  1. Put in flour
  2. Put in oats
  3. Put in sugar
  4. Put in coconut
  5. Melt butter and add in water, golden syrup and bicarb soda
  6. Mix it all together with a spoon
  7. Roll mixture into a ball and make flat
  8. Put on baking paper on a tray
  9. Bake in the oven for 12 minutes at 170 degrees

Year 2/3

Hi Families,

It has been a busy week for us at school. The children have begun their new Inquiry unit which is all about Science and they are very excited. The Year 3’s went to an incursion which they enjoyed. The Year 2’s have an incursion next week, which I know they will love. We all enjoyed the discovery this week, photos are below. We also had school photo’s and a visit from a policeman to talk about cyber safety. Stay safe and warm families. Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 3/4

On Monday we had an incursion. Her name was Cin. We learnt the basics about science and we were so excited. First we learnt about the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. We played with oobleck and we made a rocket. First we put water in a little container, then we put a tablet in the little container. Then we closed the lid and put it upside down and we waited for it to explode in the air. When we played with the oobleck we had to put our hand in a claw shape, then put our hand in the oobleck. Then we grabbed the oobleck and squeezed our hands, the oobleck went hard and when we let it go it went into liquid. We put it in the container and pushed it. Next we put salt in a cup of ice and it melted. And we saw ice on the outside of the container that we put the ice in and everybody was so amazed. By Georgia and Laura

I saw an explosion that occurred from water and a tablet that dissolved and turned into a gas that then exploded. When we went outside to do the explosion it became like a rocket and the canister went up high, as high as the multipurpose room. The oobleck was a white material that was solid and liquid. It was solid when you squeezed it and liquid when you let it go.  By Austin

I was shocked when the salt turned to ice. The ice formed on the outside of the metal container. But I’m not sure why this happened. We should try to find out why this happened. When the rocket exploded I heard a popping sound when it flew into the sky. By Amy

On Monday 29th April 2024, we had an incursion. When we first got there we met a nice lady named Cin who taught us about the states of matter and science. Our first fun activity was to make a rocket using a tablet and water and a little bottle with a group. We had to put the tube upside down in a bowl then RUN AWAY! from the tube because it was going to explode. We heard a pop from the rocket and it was loud. We also found out that if you put ice in a metal cup and put a teaspoon of salt, the salt will turn into ice!  By Olivia and Katalina

On Monday, we did science about oobleck and more. We used gas and liquid and solid, 3 types of matter, which is only 5% of the universe. Solids move slow. Liquid moves at a medium speed and it takes the shape of their container. Gas was in the air and it was fast. When you add hot water to Liquid / ice crystal it turns white and blue. We added salt on top of ice and it melted and the ice formed on the outside of the container. By Aisha and Raffaela

Year 4/5

On Wednesday 1st May, Kaitlyn and Callix received their Sacrament of Reconciliation. All the year 4/5s were at Church, supporting them during this special time. Kaitlyn and Callix were led into a room with their parents by Father Aloysius. They told Father about the things that they had done and were sorry for and wanted to be forgiven for.

On Monday, Cin came to our school to teach us about chemical reactions. She is from Swinburne Uni. She is a scientist / researcher. Cin told us all about chemical reactions and showed us a few experiments. Cin taught us about solids, liquids and gasses. The next day in class, we did an experiment. We saw a solid turn into a liquid and how a liquid turned into a solid. I was so shocked at how the experiment turned out! I think the experiment was good and I hope we get to do more in the future.   By Lauren

This Monday, a lady called Cin came to our school. She was from Swinburne Uni. We did some experiments with Cin. The first one was making a small rocket. One person had to open and close the lid of a mini canister. The second person had to put some water into the canister and the third person had to put a fizzy tablet inside the canister of water. The canister was flipped upside down and put in a small plastic bowl. We waited and then the lid of the canister flew into the air. The water and tablet had mixed together to make it fly up into the air. The second experiment was feeling, touching and punching oobleck. Oobleck is a liquid that hardens when it feels pressure. We love doing Science experiments.   By Callix and Raffaele

Cin came to our school from Swinburne University this Monday and talked to us about chemical change and matter. Cin showed us some very exciting experiments. The first one was the rocket one. You only need a small round canister, a fizzy tablet and some water. You put the water and the fizzy tablet into the canister and put the lid on it. Then you quickly turn the canister upside down and place it in a small plastic bowl. You wait about 15 seconds and the lid should fly up into the air. Ours went very high into the air. The other experiments were with the Oobleck and with ice cubes and salt. This week in our classroom, we had a lot of fun making our own experiment. Ours had frozen milk that after about 3 hours started to melt. By the afternoon, it had nearly all melted into a liquid.

Year 5/6

It's Chemical ~ It's Science!!

Earlier this week our Multi Purpose Room turned into a Science laboratory with a visit from an energetic scientist who taught the students about Matter, the various types of Matter and how they can change, through heat and other chemicals. It fitted perfectly into our Term 2 unit on Chemical Change and left the students with plenty of answers, but more importantly plenty of QUESTIONS!

Wellbeing

An initiative used in Semester One has been the introduction of a Check in Wall. The purpose is for students to gauge how they are feeling at the beginning of the day, represent that in a number from 0-10 (0- awful, 10 fantastic) and put it on display for all to see. It has been an effective way on checking in with each other and making sure everyone is supported in our class.

Maths Wall

I always use the analogy of a wall when talking to my students about understanding of mathematical concepts. It is difficult, for example, for a student to understand the adding of two digit numbers if they have difficulties adding one digit numbers. We use a Maths Wall in our classroom to list the concepts we are learning in Semester One. We use this wall as a reminder of what we have learnt and it gives us an opportunity to practice the skills and concepts learnt. It's very effective!!
