SCHS Music Soiree - Series 1

On Monday 25th March, parents, friends and community members gathered in the auditorium to witness a wonderful celebration of our students’ musical talent, displayed across a large variety of instruments.

The night was truly a testament to the dedication of students and staff in the music department and their passion for their art was met by a tremendous show of support from the audience, without whom the event could not have been possible. Our own personal favourite aspect was the amazing level of ensemble cohesiveness in our duets and small groups, which could only have been achieved by hours of rehearsal and hard work.

Of course, we cannot go without acknowledging the music staff and core team who were such an instrumental part of taking the students from classroom to stage!

Director of Music - Tegan Dimble

Strings - Hilary Odgers

Woodwind - Karen Morris

Brass - Harrison Merrifield

Percussion - Darcy Mulcahy

Guitar and Bass - Luke Hart and Damien Ryles

Vocal - Emilie Washington

Special mentions: Zaeena Dimog (emcee) & stage crew

There are so many more opportunities to perform throughout the year so keep your eyes peeled for any announcements on Compass and make sure to ask your instrumental music teacher if you can be involved.

2024 Club Expo!

Hi SCHS! On the 25th of March, we held our annual club expo.

This is that wonderful time of year where all of our student clubs are able to showcase to the school community who they are, and what they’ve recently been up to. The clubs at our school account for an impressive variety of interests and activities, ranging from Bollywood dancing, to Taylor Swift, and even a club dedicated to the art of napping!

We’re very pleased to inform you that the turnout was absolutely exceptional! The effort each club poured into the expo certainly did not go unnoticed, as their creative and colourful displays managed to captivate the attention of students and teachers alike! In fact, the Agora was practically buzzing with life, as people weaved through the numerous stalls, enjoying the lively atmosphere fostered by our wonderful school community.

And on that note, we feel that it is imperative we thank all of you for showing up! Whether you helped set up the boards prior to the expo, or merely came by on Monday to check it out - your participation is immensely appreciated. A special thank you to the students who voluntarily helped us move the boards down to the Agora; you’re all absolute legends.

With 2024’s club expo being such a fantastic success, we can only imagine what the future must bring for our school’s Extracurricular program. Although, whatever it may be, we sincerely hope for your continued support and enthusiasm!

Your Extracurricular captains, Maz and Sid.

Ecocore

Ecocore is a student-led team, dedicated to addressing environmental issues with a focus on both the community around us and the global fight for climate action. We hold lots of exciting events every year, ranging from bake sales to excursions to tree planting drives. We encourage our students to work as a team to establish an environment-friendly culture at Suzanne Cory High School.

On the 7th of March, we held a Bake Sale devoted to raising funds for the Mount Rothwell Conservation and Research Reserve. This opportunity raised awareness about the reserve, and also demonstrated the high level of commitment our students have towards catering for the environment. We also implemented our key principles of reuse and recycling through our bake sale, as students were encouraged to store their baked goods in reusable containers, and distribute through paper instead of plastic plates. Our hard work paid-off, the bake sale was a huge success as it raised $254.50, which was enough to keep 5 critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoots alive for a year!!

We look forward to running more events benefitting the SCHS and the wider community in Term 2. Until then, please remember to be there and be environmentally aware!

Citizenship Update

Hello Everyone!

We hope you had a wonderful break.

It’s your Citizenship Captains here, we just wanted to say a quick thank you to the continued enthusiasm across the domain for last term. We appreciate every student who contributes and puts in their hard work, allowing the Citizenship domain to thrive. A special thank you to Gurleen Jhajj, the SRC and Keerat Sidhu for their planned fundraisers this term! The both of us will continue to dedicate ourselves to supporting students and events so that communities may thrive and benefit.

Signing off,

Iti Ashta and Zahara Nazir

The Khalsa Bake Sale

Throughout last term, many Suzanne Cory students worked diligently and displayed their willingness to make an impact within the wider community. In the last few days of school, we held a bake sale to raise funds for the international non-profit foundation, Khalsa Aid. Their services include both providing humanitarian aid to victims of natural disasters, wars and civil conflict, as well as their long term projects such as Langar Aid. And like their motto to “Recognise the human race as one”, our students all united to support the cause! As the sign ups were released, we saw so much interest!!

I want to acknowledge all of the bakers, sellers and helpers for all of their hard work and for helping make this event run smoothly! Our volunteers worked tirelessly to plan, provide and sell lots of delicious homemade goods such as brookies, caramel slices, falooda and cupcakes. Overall, we had an extremely successful bake sale thanks to the support we saw not only from donations and buyers, but also the commitment of students!

Dress As Your Future Careers Day

On the last day of term, March 26th, students had the opportunity to dress as their future career aspirations. Seeing the level of participation was absolutely outstanding! Ranging from large groups of tradees, to doctors and lawyers, to soundcloud rappers to future SCHS teachers, the futures of our students seem extremely bright.

All proceeds will be donated to The Good Friday Appeal, which will be further donated to The Royal Children’s Hospital. Thank you to all students who participated and donated!

SRC Report

Hey everyone!

We hope you had a great term and would like to give a little update on what the SRC has been up to this term.

This week we were lucky enough to have our new year 9 SRCs officially join us for their first meeting. A big congratulations to Tammy, Vignesh, Riya and Aadivir for being elected, and we can't wait to work with you all this year!

The year 10 SRCs have been hard at work planning a revamped basketball fundraiser, similar to the one that was run last year, so keep a look out for signups on Compass if you want to raise money for a good cause while also participating in a fun competition with your peers. On top of this, the year 10s have been planning an awesome new SRC News initiative which you can expect to see very soon!

Year 11 SRCs have started off the year with a bang by re-establishing the SCHS Cultural Celebrations Committee. So far, the committee has run the paper lantern making challenge on the 27th of February to celebrate Lunar New Year and the Easter Scavenger Hunt on the last day of term before Easter holidays. Both events were huge successes, but the year 11s aren't stopping there! Signups for the lettuce games raising money for Drought Relief are up now on Compass; will you volunteer as tribute?

Year 12 SRCs have been hard at work planning formal this term, with the theme being announced as “Hollywood Red Carpet!” The date for formal has also been confirmed as June 6th, so mark the date in your calendars and get excited! We can’t wait to see all of your A-list outfits ;)

We are also excited to announce that Staff vs Student week is happening Term 2 Week 4! As usual, we will be running debating, trivia, netball and the highly anticipated lip sync battle throughout the week. We encourage participation from both teachers and students of all year levels, so keep an eye out on Compass for sign up forms.

We hope you all have had an amazing break and can’t wait to keep delivering more fun events and initiatives this term :)

- Leroy, Year 10 Kororoit SRC and Sofia, SRC Co-Chair

SPORTS CAPTAINS ADDRESS

What an eventful term it has been, encompassing a range of activities from swimming to athletics, along with the resurgence of GBA. We extend hearty congratulations to Kororoit for their sweeping victory in both Athletics and Swimming. A sincere shout-out goes to all participants whose involvement, whether on the field or otherwise, truly enriched the day's proceedings.

In the realm of senior sports, volleyball took centre stage this term. In the Y12 division, Blackwood emerged victorious in a closely contested match against Rothwell, securing a 37-34 win. Conversely, in the Y11 division, Rothwell prevailed over Blackwood with a score of 34-27.

The revival of GBA has been met with enthusiasm. Exciting matches unfolded, with Rothwell and Kororoit kicking off the series, resulting in a scoreline of 28-4 in favour of Rothwell. Subsequent clashes included Blackwood versus Cottrell, culminating in a 43-27 victory for Blackwood. However, the climax arrived with a gripping final between Blackwood and Rothwell on March 25th, ending in a nail-biting tie at 36-36. What lies ahead? Will there be a rematch, or will we transition into the next season? The answer remains in suspense, awaiting our decision.

Be sure to watch out for an announcement from your house sports captains or Alesha and I regarding Active April.

On behalf of all the sports captains, we wish you a restful break (but stay active, go for a run or something)

Your sports captains, Alesha and Keerat

2023 Greece-Italy Tour Reunion

last year’s September holidays, we were privileged to be given the opportunity to go on a tour of Greece and Italy, learning about its rich Ancient History. A total of around 30 students across various year levels, and staff members embarked on this journey. We enriched our knowledge about the culture of European countries, and also satisfied our cravings of the local cuisine.

At the start of the trip, some of us were a bit apprehensive about signing up as we did not know anyone who was attending the trip. However, it was a great opportunity for us to create lasting connections with new people both within and outside our year level.

Earlier this term, we had our reunion lunch  - a chance for us to all look back fondly on the memories we created and refresh on our cultural and historical understanding of Greece and Italy. Sadly some members were unable to attend, but those who were able to make it were welcomed with pizzas and a trivia about the locations that we visited throughout our stay in Europe. Although some retained more information than others, we had fun nonetheless.

Mr Drummond was kind enough to share his photos from the course of the trip; collated into a video compilation. As we laughed at ourselves, a wave of nostalgia entered the room. How we wish to be back in the tour bus; sleeping between cities, reflecting on the new friendships that were bonded.

Overall, the reunion lunch was fulfilling, both for our stomachs and an experience as a whole, that drew a close to the Greece-Italy trip.

On behalf of all the members of the trip,

Tim Nguyen (B2), Yu Lily Li (K7)
