Culture Club Nepal

Namaste.

We were very fortunate to be able to run Culture Club Nepal in Term 4. We have three Nepalese families at our school and they each contributed to making all the sessions, interesting and enjoyable for our students.

Our first session was run by Maisha’s parents, Mahendra and Pragya Kshetri. They taught us all about their country’s geography, multiple languages and ethnic groups, flag and their famous mountains.

Session 1 Activities- Flag making, decorate name tag with Nepalese writing. Some food tasting.

Second session was run by Aaradhya and Avika’s parents Ganga and Deepak Gaihre and assisted by John Shrestha’s parents: Bishnu and Tika.

Session 2 Activities – Planting barley seeds to grow jamara, painting the national bird, danphe and making the national flower; red rhododendrons with paper. Food tasting.

Our last session was all about the many festivals and holidays they have in Nepal. We also learned that they have a six-day working week with Saturday as the only day off. Bishnu and Tika Shrestha gave a detailed presentation of a few major festivals with the focus being on the festival Dashain. Their friends Ganga and Deepak returned once again to help us out with the activities.

Session 3 Activities – The boys made topi’s (Nepalese hats) added barley grass or jamara to their hair tika to their foreheads if they wished. The girls -used wool to add plaits with beads to their hair as well as jamara (barley grass). A number of girls also asked to have tika put on their foreheads. Tika is made out of rice, yogurt and vermilion. It symbolises the triumph of good over evil. We also had the pleasure of tasting Nepalese food once again.

We would like to thank these lovely parents for taking time off to teach us about their country and share their beautiful culture and food with us. We learned so much! My sincere thanks to Miss Lim for being instrumental in getting the activities ready for Culture Club Nepal.
