Clever Class | Kinder

S A P L I N G S

Over the course of the last few weeks literacy focus, our class has had a rich experience of delving deeper into the understanding of sentence structure. Together, we investigated and dissected sentences, revealing their intricate details to grasp the different narratives they can portray.

A key highlight of this sentence exploration has been reading different passages about the 'nogard' and ‘the blue monster’. It was a joy to witness the diversity of visualisations, all thanks to their individual comprehension of the descriptive language employed.

These activities served as a powerful catalyst for nurturing our students' critical thinking and literacy skills. Drawing from Outcome 5 of the EYLF, the children were fully engaged in "communicating, understanding and expressing their thoughts, ideas, feelings and behaviour". This was clearly manifested in their diverse artistic renditions of the 'nogard' and ‘the blue monster’ and their insightful inferences from images. The task at hand also stirred up their "imaginative and thoughtful thinking", as could be seen from each unique piece of art stemming from different interpretations of the same sentences. In a subtle yet significant way, this activity echoes the principles of Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory, where children build knowledge through interaction and guided learning.

We will continue to extend the learning experience of storytelling and inference-making. We will offer images or phrase to the children and invite them to devise a before and after scenario with drawing cues similar to those in structure from the 'nogard' and ‘the blue monster’ experiences.
