Guided Reading in Eddie Woo!

Every day students in 3/4 Eddie Woo engage in Guided Reading.  

Guided Reading is a 45 minute session with 3 rotations.  Students sit with the teacher and receive explicit instruction on reading strategies, as well as engage in deep discussions about texts, developing comprehension skills and critical thinking. Students explore texts together, discuss story plots and unpack text structure.

During the week students:

•  Develop summaries of texts they've read
• Unpack a character's personality and their motives in the text
• Identify examples of  figurative language, noun groups and sentence types
• Develop strategies to decode unfamiliar words
• Use the dictionary to define unfamiliar words
• Identify main ideas, explore themes and messages within the text

Students work collaboratively and share their thinking about their reading.  Students use the text as evidence to support their thinking when sharing their perspectives and opinions.  This allows them to expand their understanding of the text.
