CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week we will be exploring the change in state between solids and liquids through our narrative writing.

VOCABULARY

Change in State:

The term used to describe the process of one state of matter (solid, liquid or gas) changing to another.

Solid:

A state of matter that maintains its own shape instead of conforming to the shape of its container.

Liquid:

A state of matter that flows and takes on the shape of the container in which they are placed.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Engage your child in cooking a meal with you at home. Discuss the different types of ingredients you are using and how the addition or removal of heat affects the ingredient by changing its state of matter - or not.

For example: You may be using chocolate to make a dessert. You may start with a block of chocolate that is solid. You may need to heat the chocolate on the stove to melt it for your recipe. The melted chocolate has now formed more of a liquid state as it can take the shape of the container in which it is placed.

What other ingredients could you do this with?
