Allstar Girls' Hoop Time Basketball Region Finals

Georgia A, Zerrin A, Angela C, Aria G, Diya H, Alexandra K, Celeste M and Isabelle N qualified to represent EHPS at the Allstar Girls Hoop Time Region Finals on Tuesday 14 November. The basketball competition was held at the Nunawading Basketball Centre in Burwood East.

I was one of the eight students who participated in the Girls All-stars Basketball Team. Our Senior girls’ team had the opportunity to compete in both Division and Regional competitions.

On the 14th of November, our team competed in the Senior All-stars Girls, Hooptime Regional Finals. Our first few games were quite challenging as the teams we played were very strong and experienced.

The team put in a great effort in to all 7 games. We lost 6 games and won our last which we were all very proud of. Even though we lost, we were still grateful to have this amazing opportunity to play as a team together.

My dad who was our coach was extremely proud of the way we played but most importantly, the sportsmanship that we showed.

I’d like to thank our team members, Zerrin, Georgia, Angela, Diya, Alexandra, Celeste and Isabelle for working really well as a team and making this such an enjoyable experience.

I would also like to thank Mr Perini for allowing us to take part in this competition, and Ms Hocking for her support with training and encouragement. Thank you to the wonderful parents who were there to support us and to my dad for being a great coach.   Aria

On Tuesday 14th of November the Allstar girls’ team went to Regional Hooptime finals. It was a fun but challenging day, playing a total of six games and winning one. There were a few close games and we played amazingly. I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents, Ms Hocking and Michael for coaching and supporting us in this wonderful experience.   Georgia

I competed at the regional Hooptime last week, along with Georgia, Aria, Celeste, Isabelle, Diya, Alexandra and Angela.  There were some really good teams that showed great skill. Although we only won one out of the six games, we had an awesome time together.  I would like to thank Ms Hocking for organising the whole event and Michael, Aria's Dad, who coached us for three of the events throughout the year. He was a fantastic coach. I would also like to thank all the parents who came along and supported us as well.    Zerrin

Congratulations to the Allstar girls on their fantastic sportsmanship throughout all their basketball competitions during the year. It was an amazing effort to win their district event which then qualified them to compete at Division and Region Hoop Time finals. Many thanks to the parents for driving and supporting the team. Special thanks to Michael for coaching the team too.

I’m going to share some of my great opportunities that I have been involved in this year for 2024. Two opportunities that I have been asked to share are my high school scholarship for tennis to Maribyrnong Sports Academy Year 7-12 and being selected for the Australian Open 2024 ball kid squad.

Australian Open Ball Kid 2024

Watching my brother and hearing about all the fun he has had with being a ball kid at the Australian Open over the last couple of years has inspired me to trial myself. Towards the end of July this year finally the day arrived in big large letters - "Congratulations you have been selected in the AUSTRALIAN OPEN BALL KID SQUAD 2024". I was so excited when I found out.

To become a ballkid for the Australian Open you need to be 12 to 15 years of age on the 1st January for the event year. The first trial is in May and if you are successful you will be informed to return for level 2 trials in July.

The final AO 2024 squad of around 400 ballkids will complete five on court training sessions and an official orientation day. This is where we learn about the tournament and the important role we play. Training sessions include drills to develop ball handling skills, rolling with precision and anticipating the player’s needs. The final thing we learn about is entering and exiting the court.

On court experience before the AO are mastered by attending the blind and low vision championships, wheelchair open, premier league and December showdown events in November and December.

Maribyrong Sports Academy (MSA)

After applying to attend Maribyrnong Sports Academy tennis program earlier in the year, I am pleased to say that I have been successful and given a full scholarship from Year 7 to 12 to attend the school.

It was my idea to attend the school, and I passed the physical test to be one of the 100 students accepted into Year 7 out of hundreds of applicants from different sports.

To apply for a chance to gain a scholarship for tennis, my parents had to apply online and provide general student details as to level of competition, report cards, NAPLAN results and achievements in my sport. If you were successful in the application you are then notified of a trial process for physical testing – power, speed, etc, and sports specific training and drills. Based on the review of general application and physical trial applicants were notified by email if they are successful or not.

The tennis program has three early morning starts at 7am till 8.30am, followed by two or three after school sessions from 3.30pm till 5.00pm. The morning session will be based on hitting, drills and tactical point play. Afternoon sessions will consist of match play.  The coaches have designed the program around competitiveness, intensity, hard work and tactics.

It will be a big challenge next year to attend as I will be carrying all my tennis gear and school books on two train trips and tram ride each way each day to get to and from school, but it will be worth it all if I achieve my end goal of playing college tennis, and hopefully progress to the professional tour or grand slams.

Hopefully hearing about my success of late inspires and motivates you to give your goals a chance even if you think they are unreachable. You will never know unless you try.

On Friday 21 October I went to Melbourne Park where I played tennis for a day in match play against the best players in the state. If you’re wondering where Melbourne Park is, it is where the Australian Open is held.  I was selected because I was in the Eastern Metro Under 11s Squad; to be selected for that you must be the top four boys or girls in your Region and there are just four regions in total. I have also been selected be in the National Development Squad which is at Melbourne Park weekly. It was really great experience playing with all the other people there in singles and doubles. The best part being there was probably playing in one of the stadiums even if there was no crowd. The other good part about being there is seeing lots of professional players such as Thanasi Kokkinakis.

On Saturday 11 November I went to Mount Gambier in South Australia to play tennis representing Victoria against South Australia in a state of origin contest. After a five hour drive we arrived in Mount Gambier; it was such a long drive.

I was playing number two for Victoria. We played a singles, doubles and a mixed doubles on both the Saturday and Sunday. My second number singles match was the toughest because it went for two hours and he was a tough opponent but I managed to stay focused and really concentrate on the crucial points, therefore I managed to pull though and win. Victoria won which was great. I had a lot of fun and I hope to do it again.
